Acts, Chapter 7

Answering the high priest, Stephen recounts the history of Israel from Avraham through Yosef, Moshe, the tabernacle and Shlomo’s house, and charges the council with resisting the Holy Spirit. They cast him out of the city and stone him as he sees Yeshua standing at God’s right hand, while Shaul looks on.

7:1Then said the high priest, “Are these things so?”

Εἶπε δὲ ὁ ἀρχιερεύς, Εἰ ἄρα ταῦτα οὕτως ἔχει;

Avraham and the promise

7:2And he said, “Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Avraham (Abraham), when he was in Aram-Naharayim (Mesopotamia), before he dwelt in Ḥaran (Charran),

7:3And said unto him, ‘Get you out of your country, and from your kindred, and come into the land which I shall show you.’

Tenakh. Quotes Genesis 12:1.

7:4Then came he out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Ḥaran: and from thence, when his father was dead, He removed him into this land, wherein you now dwell.

7:5And He gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet He promised that He would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

Tenakh. Quotes Genesis 17:8.

7:6And God spoke on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

Tenakh. Quotes Genesis 15:13.

7:7‘And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge,’ said God: ‘and after that shall they come forth, and serve Me in this place.’

Tenakh. Quotes Genesis 15:14; Exodus 3:12.

7:8And He gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Avraham begat Yitzḥak (Isaac), and circumcised him the eighth day; and Yitzḥak begat Ya’akov (Jacob); and Ya’akov begat the twelve patriarchs.

Yosef in Mitzrayim

7:9And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Yosef (Joseph) into Mitzrayim (Egypt): but God was with him,

7:10And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Par’oh (Pharaoh) king of Mitzrayim; and he made him governor over Mitzrayim and all his house.

7:11Now there came a dearth over all the land of Mitzrayim and Kena’an (Chanaan), and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

7:12But when Ya’akov heard that there was grain in Mitzrayim, he sent out our fathers first.

7:13And at the second time Yosef was made known to his brethren; and Yosef’s kindred was made known unto Par’oh.

7:14Then sent Yosef, and called his father Ya’akov to him, and all his kindred, seventy and five souls.

7:15So Ya’akov went down into Mitzrayim, and died, he, and our fathers,

7:16And were carried over into Shechem (Sychem), and laid in the sepulchre that Avraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Ḥamor (Emmor) the father of Shechem.

Moshe the deliverer

7:17But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Avraham, the people grew and multiplied in Mitzrayim,

7:18Till another king arose, which knew not Yosef.

Tenakh. Quotes Exodus 1:8.

7:19The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

7:20In which time Moshe (Moses) was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months:

7:21And when he was cast out, Par’oh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

7:22And Moshe was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

7:23And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

7:24And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and struck the Egyptian:

7:25For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

7:26And the next day he showed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, ‘Sirs, you are brethren; why do you wrong one to another?’

τῇ δὲ ἐπιούσῃ ἡμέρᾳ ὤφθη αὐτοῖς μαχομένοις, καὶ συνήλασεν αὐτοὺς εἰς εἰρήνην, εἰπών, Ἄνδρες, ἀδελφοί ἐστε ὑμεῖς· ἱνατί ἀδικεῖτε ἀλλήλους;

7:27But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

ὁ δὲ ἀδικῶν τὸν πλησίον ἀπώσατο αὐτόν, εἰπών, Τίς σε κατέστησεν ἄρχοντα καὶ δικαστὴν ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς;

Tenakh. Quotes Exodus 2:14.

7:28Will you kill me, as you did the Egyptian yesterday?’

μὴ ἀνελεῖν με σὺ θέλεις, ὃν τρόπον ἀνεῖλες χθὲς τὸν Αἰγύπτιον;

Tenakh. Quotes Exodus 2:14.

7:29Then fled Moshe at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Midyan (Madian), where he begat two sons.

7:30And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai (Sina) an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

7:31When Moshe saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,

7:32Saying, ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Avraham, and the God of Yitzḥak, and the God of Ya’akov.’ Then Moshe trembled, and durst not behold.

Tenakh. Quotes Exodus 3:6.

7:33Then said the Lord to him, ‘Put off your shoes from your feet: for the place where you stand is holy ground.

Tenakh. Quotes Exodus 3:5.

7:34I have seen, I have seen the affliction of My people which is in Mitzrayim, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you into Mitzrayim.’

Tenakh. Quotes Exodus 3:7–8; Exodus 3:10.

7:35This Moshe whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

Tenakh. Quotes Exodus 2:14.

7:36He brought them out, after that he had shown wonders and signs in the land of Mitzrayim, and in Yam Suf (the Red Sea), and in the wilderness forty years.

7:37This is that Moshe, which said unto the children of Israel, ‘A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall you hear.’

Tenakh. Quotes Deuteronomy 18:15.

7:38This is he, that was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel which spoke to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

7:39To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Mitzrayim,

7:40Saying unto Aharon (Aaron), ‘Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moshe, which brought us out of the land of Mitzrayim, we know not what is become of him.’

Tenakh. Quotes Exodus 32:1.

7:41And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

7:42Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘O you house of Israel, have you offered to Me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

ἔστρεψε δὲ ὁ Θεός, καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτοὺς λατρεύειν τῇ στρατιᾷ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ· καθὼς γέγραπται ἐν βίβλῳ τῶν προφητῶν, Μὴ σφάγια καὶ θυσίας προσηνέγκατέ μοι ἔτη τεσσαράκοντα ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, οἶκος Ἰσραήλ;

Tenakh. Quotes Amos 5:25.

7:43Yea, you took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which you made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Bavel (Babylon).’

Tenakh. Quotes Amos 5:26–27.
The tabernacle and the temple

7:44Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as He had appointed, speaking unto Moshe, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

7:45Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Yehoshua (Jesus) into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, unto the days of David;

7:46Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Ya’akov.

7:47But Shlomo (Solomon) built Him a house.

7:48Howbeit the Most High dwells not in temples made with hands; as says the prophet,

7:49‘Heaven is My throne, and earth is My footstool: what house will you build Me? says the Lord: or what is the place of My rest?

Ὁ οὐρανός μοι θρόνος, ἡ δὲ γῆ ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν μου· ποῖον οἶκον οἰκοδομήσετέ μοι λέγει Κύριος· ἢ τίς τόπος τῆς καταπαύσεώς μου;

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 66:1.

7:50Has not My hand made all these things?’

οὐχὶ ἡ χείρ μου ἐποίησε ταῦτα πάντα;

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 66:2.
Stephen rebukes the council

7:51You stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you do always resist the Holy Spirit: as your fathers did, so do you.

7:52Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which showed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom you have been now the betrayers and murderers:

7:53Who have received the Torah by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.”

The stoning of Stephen

7:54When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

7:55But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Yeshua (Jesus) standing on the right hand of God,

7:56And said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.”

7:57Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord,

7:58And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man’s feet, whose name was Shaul (Saul).

7:59And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, “Master Yeshua, receive my spirit.”

7:60And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”

Changes: shown verse by verse beside the English and Greek, without its section headings and footnotes; where it joins verses, the later verse points to the joined one; 3 John 15 is shown with verse 14. Quotations
A note under a verse links each quotation from the Tenakh to our Tenakh chapter page. Those pages follow the Hebrew Bible’s verse numbers; where they differ from the King James numbers, both are given.
