Genesis, Chapter 15

Hashem promises Avram a son of his own and seed as the stars, and Avram believes; Avram divides the animals, and in a deep sleep is told of his seed’s affliction in a foreign land, and Hashem makes a covenant giving the land to his seed.

The promise of a son

15:1After these things the word of Hashem came unto Avram (Abram) in a vision, saying, “Fear not, Avram; I am your shield, and your exceedingly great reward.”

15:2And Avram said, “Lord Hashem, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damesek (Damascus)?”

15:3And Avram said, “Behold, to me You have given no seed; and lo, one born in my house is my heir.”

15:4And behold, the word of Hashem came unto him, saying, “This one shall not be your heir; but he that shall come forth out of your own body shall be your heir.”

15:5And He brought him forth outside, and said, “Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if you are able to number them.” And He said unto him, “So shall your seed be.”

15:6And he believed in Hashem; and He counted it to him for righteousness.

The covenant between the pieces

15:7And He said unto him, “I am Hashem who brought you out of Ur Kasdim (Ur of the Chaldees), to give you this land to inherit it.”

15:8And he said, “Lord Hashem, by what shall I know that I shall inherit it?”

15:9And He said unto him, “Take for Me a heifer three years old, and a she-goat three years old, and a ram three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”

15:10And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece opposite the other; but the birds he did not divide.

15:11And when the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, Avram drove them away.

15:12And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Avram; and lo, a horror of great darkness fell upon him.

15:13And He said unto Avram, “Know for certain that your seed shall be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years.

15:14And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge; and afterward they shall come out with great substance.

15:15And you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.

15:16And in the fourth generation they shall come back here; for the iniquity of the Emori is not yet full.”

15:17And it came to pass, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace and a burning torch that passed between those pieces.

The borders of the land

15:18On that same day Hashem made a covenant with Avram, saying, “Unto your seed have I given this land, from the river of Mitzrayim (Egypt) unto the great river, the river Perat (Euphrates):

15:19the Keini (Kenites), and the Kenizzi (Kenizzites), and the Kadmoni (Kadmonites),

15:20and the Ḥitti (Hittites), and the Perizzi, and the Refa’im (Rephaim),

15:21and the Emori, and the Kena’ani, and the Girgashi (Girgashites), and the Yevusi (Jebusites).”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
