Acts, Chapter 8

After Stephen’s death a great persecution scatters the congregation, and Shaul ravages it. Philip preaches the Messiah in Shomron, where many are immersed, Peter rebukes Shim’on the sorcerer, and on the road to Azzah Philip explains Yesha’yahu to a eunuch of Kush and immerses him.

8:1And Shaul (Saul) was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was a great persecution against the congregation which was at Yerushalayim (Jerusalem); and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Yehudah (Judaea) and Shomron (Samaria), except the apostles.

8:2And devout men carried Stephen to his burial, and made great lamentation over him.

8:3As for Shaul, he made havoc of the congregation, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.

Philip preaches in Shomron

8:4Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where preaching the word.

8:5Then Philip went down to the city of Shomron, and preached Messiah unto them.

8:6And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spoke, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

8:7For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

8:8And there was great joy in that city.

Shim’on the sorcerer

8:9But there was a certain man, called Shim’on (Simon), which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Shomron, giving out that himself was some great one:

8:10To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the great power of God.”

8:11And to him they had regard, because that of long time he had bewitched them with sorceries.

8:12But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah, they were immersed, both men and women.

8:13Then Shim’on himself believed also: and when he was immersed, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

Peter and Yoḥanan in Shomron

8:14Now when the apostles which were at Yerushalayim heard that Shomron had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and Yoḥanan (John):

8:15Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit:

8:16(For as yet He was fallen upon none of them: only they were immersed in the name of the Master Yeshua.)

8:17Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

8:18And when Shim’on saw that through laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,

8:19Saying, “Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit.”

8:20But Peter said unto him, “Your money perish with you, because you have thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

8:21You have neither part nor lot in this matter: for your heart is not right in the sight of God.

8:22Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.

8:23For I perceive that you are in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.”

8:24Then answered Shim’on, and said, “Pray you to the Lord for me, that none of these things which you have spoken come upon me.”

8:25And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Yerushalayim, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

Philip and the eunuch of Kush

8:26And the angel of the Lord spoke unto Philip, saying, “Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goes down from Yerushalayim unto Azzah (Gaza), which is desert.”

8:27And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Kush (Ethiopia), a eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Yerushalayim for to worship,

8:28Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Yesha’yahu (Esaias) the prophet.

8:29Then the Spirit said unto Philip, “Go near, and join yourself to this chariot.”

8:30And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Yesha’yahu, and said, “Do you understand what you read?”

προσδραμὼν δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ ἀναγινώσκοντος τὸν προφήτην Ἠσαΐαν, καὶ εἶπεν, Ἆρά γε γινώσκεις ἃ ἀναγινώσκεις;

8:31And he said, “How can I, except some man should guide me?” And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

8:32The place of the scripture which he read was this, “He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened He not His mouth:

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 53:7.

8:33In His humiliation His judgment was taken away: and who shall declare His generation? for His life is taken from the earth.”

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 53:8.

8:34And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, “I pray you, of whom speaks the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?”

ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ εὐνοῦχος τῷ Φιλίππῳ εἶπε, Δέομαί σου, περὶ τίνος ὁ προφήτης λέγει τοῦτο; περὶ ἑαυτοῦ, ἢ περὶ ἑτέρου τινός;

8:35Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Yeshua.

8:36And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, “See, here is water; what does hinder me to be immersed?”

ὡς δὲ ἐπορεύοντο κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν, ἦλθον ἐπί τι ὕδωρ· καί φησιν ὁ εὐνοῦχος, Ἰδού, ὕδωρ· τί κωλύει με βαπτισθῆναι;

8:37And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Yeshua the Messiah is the Son of God.”

8:38And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he immersed him.

8:39And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

8:40But Philip was found at Ashdod (Azotus): and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
