Acts, Chapter 6
When the Grecian widows are neglected in the daily distribution, the Twelve have seven men of good report chosen to serve, among them Stephen and Philip. Stephen does great wonders, and men of the synagogue of the Libertines stir up false witnesses and bring him before the council.
6:1And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.
6:2Then the Twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, “It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.
6:3Wherefore, brethren, look out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
6:4But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.”
ἡμεῖς δὲ τῇ προσευχῇ καὶ τῇ διακονίᾳ τοῦ λόγου προσκαρτερήσομεν.
דוכך נוכל אנחנו להתרכז בתפילה, בהטפה ובהוראה.“
6:5And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:
6:6Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.
οὓς ἔστησαν ἐνώπιον τῶν ἀποστόλων· καὶ προσευξάμενοι ἐπέθηκαν αὐτοῖς τὰς χεῖρας.
ושבעה אנשים אלה הוצגו בפני השליחים, וקיבלו את ברכתם בסמיכת ידיים ובתפילה.
6:7And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
6:8And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
Στέφανος δὲ πλήρης πίστεως καὶ δυνάμεως ἐποίει τέρατα καὶ σημεῖα μεγάλα ἐν τῷ λαῷ.
חסטפנוס, שהיה כאמור מלא אמונה ורוח הקודש, חולל נסים ונפלאות בקרב העם.
6:9Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.
6:10And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spoke.
καὶ οὐκ ἴσχυον ἀντιστῆναι τῇ σοφίᾳ καὶ τῷ πνεύματι ᾧ ἐλάλει.
יאך איש מהם לא יכול היה לגבור על החוכמה ועל הרוח שהיו בו.
6:11Then they suborned men, which said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moshe (Moses), and against God.”
τότε ὑπέβαλον ἄνδρας λέγοντας ὅτι Ἀκηκόαμεν αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ῥήματα βλάσφημα εἰς Μωσῆν καὶ τὸν Θεόν
יאלכן הם שחדו כמה אנשים, כדי שיעידו נגד סטפנוס ויטענו ששמעו אותו מקלל את משה רבנו ואפילו את אלוהים.
6:12And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,
συνεκίνησάν τε τὸν λαὸν καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ τοὺς γραμματεῖς, καὶ ἐπιστάντες συνήρπασαν αὐτόν, καὶ ἤγαγον εἰς τὸ συνέδριον,
יבאשמת השקר הזאת עוררה את זעם ההמונים ואת כעסם של המנהיגים על סטפנוס. הם אסרו אותו והעמידוהו לדין לפני הסנהדרין.
6:13And set up false witnesses, which said, “This man ceases not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the Torah:
ἔστησάν τε μάρτυρας ψευδεῖς λέγοντας, Ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος οὐ παύεται ῥήματα βλάσφημα λαλῶν κατὰ τοῦ τόπου τοῦ ἁγίου τούτου καὶ τοῦ νόμου·
יגעדי השקר העידו נגד סטפנוס וטענו שאינו מפסיק לדבר נגד בית־המקדש ונגד התורה.
6:14For we have heard him say, that this Yeshua (Jesus) of Natzrat (Nazareth) shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moshe delivered us.”
6:15And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.
καὶ ἀτενίσαντες εἰς αὐτὸν ἅπαντες οἱ καθεζόμενοι ἐν τῷ συνεδρίῳ, εἶδον τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ὡσεὶ πρόσωπον ἀγγέλου.
טובאותו רגע הביטו כל חברי הסנהדרין בסטפנוס וראו את פניו, ממש כפני מלאך אלוהים!

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
