Exodus, Chapter 2

A son of the house of Levi is hidden in an ark of bulrushes and drawn from the river by Par’oh’s daughter, who names him Moshe; grown, Moshe slays an Egyptian, flees to Midyan and marries Tzipporah, and God hears the groaning of the children of Yisrael.

The birth of Moshe

2:1And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took as wife a daughter of Levi.

2:2And the woman conceived, and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.

2:3And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with clay and with pitch, and put the child in it; and she laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.

2:4And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him.

2:5And the daughter of Par’oh (Pharaoh) came down to bathe at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to fetch it.

2:6And when she had opened it, she saw the child; and, behold, the boy wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

2:7Then his sister said to Par’oh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call for you a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”

2:8And Par’oh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” And the maiden went and called the child’s mother.

2:9And Par’oh’s daughter said unto her, “Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages.” And the woman took the child, and nursed it.

2:10And the child grew, and she brought him unto Par’oh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moshe (Moses); and she said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

Moshe slays an Egyptian

2:11And it came to pass in those days, when Moshe was grown, that he went out unto his brothers, and looked on their burdens; and he saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.

2:12And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

2:13And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting; and he said to the one that did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?”

2:14And he said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?” And Moshe feared, and said, “Surely the thing is known.”

Moshe in Midyan

2:15Now when Par’oh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moshe. But Moshe fled from the face of Par’oh, and dwelt in the land of Midyan (Midian); and he sat down by a well.

2:16Now the priest of Midyan had seven daughters; and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

2:17And the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moshe stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

2:18And when they came to Re’uel (Reuel) their father, he said, “How is it that you have come so soon today?”

2:19And they said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.”

2:20And he said unto his daughters, “And where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”

2:21And Moshe was content to dwell with the man; and he gave Moshe Tzipporah (Zipporah) his daughter.

2:22And she bore a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said, “I have been a stranger in a strange land.”

God hears Yisrael’s groaning

2:23And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Mitzrayim (Egypt) died; and the children of Yisrael (Israel) sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

2:24And God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Avraham (Abraham), with Yitzḥak (Isaac), and with Yaakov (Jacob).

2:25And God looked upon the children of Yisrael, and God took notice of them.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
