Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 17
When Avram is ninety-nine, El Shaddai renames him Avraham, gives him the covenant of circumcision, renames Sarai as Sarah and promises she will bear Yitzḥak, blesses Yishma’el, and Avraham circumcises himself and every male of his house.
17:1And when Avram (Abram) was ninety and nine years old, Hashem appeared to Avram, and said unto him, “I am El Shaddai (the Almighty God); walk before Me, and be perfect.
17:2And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”
17:3And Avram fell on his face; and God talked with him, saying,
17:4“As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.
17:5Neither shall your name any more be called Avram, but your name shall be Avraham (Abraham); for a father of many nations have I made you.
17:6And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come out of you.
17:7And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto you, and to your seed after you.
17:8And I will give unto you, and to your seed after you, the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Kena’an (Canaan), for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.”
17:9And God said unto Avraham, “And you shall keep My covenant, you, and your seed after you in their generations.
17:10This is My covenant, which you shall keep, between Me and you and your seed after you: every male among you shall be circumcised.
17:11And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.
17:12And he who is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male in your generations, he who is born in the house, or bought with money from any stranger, who is not of your seed.
17:13He who is born in your house, and he who is bought with your money, must surely be circumcised; and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.
17:14And the uncircumcised male whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
17:15And God said unto Avraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.
17:16And I will bless her, and give you a son also from her; yes, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”
17:17Then Avraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born unto him who is a hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear?”
17:18And Avraham said unto God, “O that Yishma’el (Ishmael) might live before You!”
17:19And God said, “Sarah your wife shall bear you a son indeed; and you shall call his name Yitzḥak (Isaac); and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.
17:20And as for Yishma’el, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
17:21But My covenant will I establish with Yitzḥak, whom Sarah shall bear unto you at this set time in the next year.”
17:22And He finished talking with him, and God went up from Avraham.
17:23And Avraham took Yishma’el his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Avraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin on that very same day, as God had said unto him.
17:24And Avraham was ninety and nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
17:25And Yishma’el his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
17:26On that very same day Avraham was circumcised, and Yishma’el his son.
17:27And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money from the stranger, were circumcised with him.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
