Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 18
The portion of the priests the Levi’im, who have no inheritance but Hashem, and the dues owed them; a ban on divination, sorcery and consulting the dead; Hashem’s promise to raise up a Prophet like Moshe; and how to know a prophet who speaks presumptuously.
18:1The priests the Levi’im (Levites), even all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Yisrael (Israel); they shall eat the offerings of Hashem made by fire, and His inheritance.
18:2Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren; Hashem is their inheritance, as He has said unto them.
18:3And this shall be the priest’s due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep: they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the stomach.
18:4The firstfruit also of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the first of the fleece of your sheep, shall you give him.
18:5For Hashem your God has chosen him out of all your tribes, to stand to minister in the name of Hashem, him and his sons for ever.
18:6And if a Levite come from any of your gates out of all Yisrael, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his soul unto the place which Hashem shall choose,
18:7then he shall minister in the name of Hashem his God, as all his brethren the Levi’im do, who stand there before Hashem.
18:8They shall have like portions to eat, besides that which comes of the sale of his patrimony.
18:9When you have come into the land which Hashem your God gives you, you shall not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
18:10There shall not be found among you any one that makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or a soothsayer, or an enchanter, or a sorcerer,
18:11or a charmer, or one who consults a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
18:12For all that do these things are an abomination unto Hashem; and because of these abominations Hashem your God drives them out from before you.
18:13You shall be wholehearted with Hashem your God.
18:14For these nations, which you shall dispossess, hearkened unto soothsayers, and unto diviners; but as for you, Hashem your God has not allowed you so to do.
18:15Hashem your God will raise up unto you a Prophet from the midst of you, of your brethren, like unto me; unto him you shall hearken;
18:16according to all that you desired of Hashem your God in Ḥorev (Horeb) in the day of the assembly, saying, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of Hashem my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.’
18:17And Hashem said unto me, ‘They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
18:18I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto you, and will put My words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
18:19And it shall come to pass, that whoever will not hearken unto My words which he shall speak in My name, I will require it of him.
18:20But the prophet who shall presume to speak a word in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.’
18:21And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which Hashem has not spoken?’
18:22when a prophet speaks in the name of Hashem, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which Hashem has not spoken, but the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
