Exodus, Chapter 1

The names of the sons of Yaakov who came into Mitzrayim; after Yosef dies the children of Yisrael multiply, a new king over Mitzrayim afflicts them with hard bondage, the midwives Shifrah and Pu’ah fear God and save the boys, and Par’oh orders every son cast into the river.

The sons of Yaakov in Mitzrayim

1:1Now these are the names of the children of Yisrael (Israel), who came into Mitzrayim (Egypt); every man and his household came with Yaakov (Jacob):

1:2Reuven (Reuben), Shimon (Simeon), Levi, and Yehudah (Judah),

1:3Yissachar (Issachar), Zevulun (Zebulun), and Binyamin (Benjamin),

1:4Dan, and Naftali (Naphtali), Gad, and Asher.

1:5And all the souls that came out of the loins of Yaakov were seventy souls; and Yosef (Joseph) was in Mitzrayim already.

1:6And Yosef died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.

1:7And the children of Yisrael were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them.

A new king over Mitzrayim

1:8Now there arose a new king over Mitzrayim, who did not know Yosef.

1:9And he said unto his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Yisrael are more and mightier than we.

1:10Come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass that, when any war befalls us, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.”

1:11Therefore they set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Par’oh (Pharaoh) store cities, Pitom (Pithom) and Ra’amses (Raamses).

1:12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Yisrael.

1:13And the Egyptians made the children of Yisrael serve with rigor;

1:14and they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigor.

The Hebrew midwives

1:15And the king of Mitzrayim spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shifrah (Shiphrah), and the name of the other Pu’ah (Puah);

1:16and he said, “When you do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

1:17But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Mitzrayim commanded them, but saved the male children alive.

1:18And the king of Mitzrayim called for the midwives, and said unto them, “Why have you done this thing, and have saved the male children alive?”

1:19And the midwives said unto Par’oh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and give birth before the midwife comes in unto them.”

1:20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.

1:21And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that He made them houses.

1:22And Par’oh charged all his people, saying, “Every son that is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
