Luke, Chapter 4
Full of the Holy Spirit, Yeshua is tempted by the devil in the wilderness for forty days and answers him with the words of Scripture. At Natzrat He reads from Yesha’yahu in the synagogue and is driven out; at Kefar Naḥum He casts out an unclean spirit, heals Shim’on’s wife’s mother and many others, and preaches in Galil.
4:1And Yeshua (Jesus) being full of the Holy Spirit returned from Yarden (Jordan), and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
4:2Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days He did eat nothing: and when they were ended, He afterward hungered.
4:3And the devil said unto Him, “If You be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.”
4:4And Yeshua answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”
4:5And the devil, taking Him up into a high mountain, showed unto Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
4:6And the devil said unto Him, “All this power will I give You, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
4:7If You therefore will worship me, all shall be Yours.”
4:8And Yeshua answered and said unto him, “Get you behind Me, Satan: for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’”
4:9And he brought Him to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and set Him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto Him, “If You be the Son of God, cast Yourself down from hence:
4:10For it is written, ‘He shall give His angels charge over You, to keep You:
4:11And in their hands they shall bear You up, lest at any time You dash Your foot against a stone.’”
4:12And Yeshua answering said unto him, “It is said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”
4:13And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from Him for a season.
4:14And Yeshua returned in the power of the Spirit into Galil (Galilee): and there went out a fame of Him through all the region round about.
4:15And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
4:16And He came to Natzrat (Nazareth), where He had been brought up: and, as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
4:17And there was delivered unto Him the book of the prophet Yesha’yahu (Esaias). And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written,
4:18“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
יח”רוח ה׳ עלי, יען משח ה׳ אותי לבשר ענוים; שלחני לחבש לנשברי לב, לקרוא לשבוים דרור ולאסורים – פְּקַח־קוֹחַ;
4:19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”
4:20And He closed the book, and He gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on Him.
4:21And He began to say unto them, “This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”
4:22And all bare Him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is not this Yosef’s (Joseph’s) son?”
καὶ πάντες ἐμαρτύρουν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ἐπὶ τοῖς λόγοις τῆς χάριτος τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔλεγον, Οὐχ οὗτος ἐστιν ὁ υἱός Ἰωσήφ;
4:23And He said unto them, “You will surely say unto Me this proverb, ‘Physician, heal Yourself: whatsoever we have heard done in Kefar Naḥum (Capernaum), do also here in Your country.’”
4:24And He said, “Truly I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.
4:25But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Eliyahu (Elias), when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;
4:26But unto none of them was Eliyahu sent, save unto Tzarfat (Sarepta), a city of Tzidon (Sidon), unto a woman that was a widow.
4:27And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha (Eliseus) the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Arami (Syrian).”
4:28And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
4:29And rose up, and thrust Him out of the city, and led Him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast Him down headlong.
4:30But He passing through the midst of them went His way,
4:31And came down to Kefar Naḥum, a city of Galil, and taught them on the sabbath days.
4:32And they were astonished at His doctrine: for His word was with power.
4:33And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean demon, and cried out with a loud voice,
4:34Saying, “Let us alone; what have we to do with You, You Yeshua of Natzrat? are You come to destroy us? I know You who You are; the Holy One of God.”
4:35And Yeshua rebuked him, saying, “Hold your peace, and come out of him.” And when the demon had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.
4:36And they were all amazed, and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word is this! for with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”
καὶ ἐγένετο θάμβος ἐπὶ πάντας, καὶ συνελάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους, λέγοντες, Τίς ὁ λόγος οὗτος, ὅτι ἐν ἐξουσίᾳ καὶ δυνάμει ἐπιτάσσει τοῖς ἀκαθάρτοις πνεύμασι, καὶ ἐξέρχονται;
4:37And the fame of Him went out into every place of the country round about.
4:38And He arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Shim’on’s (Simon’s) house. And Shim’on’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought Him for her.
4:39And He stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.
4:40Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them, and healed them.
4:41And demons also came out of many, crying out, and saying, “You are Messiah the Son of God.” And He rebuking them permitted them not to speak: for they knew that He was Messiah.
4:42And when it was day, He departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought Him, and came unto Him, and stayed Him, that He should not depart from them.
4:43And He said unto them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.”
4:44And He preached in the synagogues of Galil.

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
