Luke, Chapter 3
Yoḥanan the son of Zecharyah preaches an immersion of repentance in the country about the Yarden, teaches the people, the publicans and the soldiers, and tells of one mightier who will immerse with the Holy Spirit. Herod shuts Yoḥanan in prison; Yeshua is immersed, and His genealogy is traced back to Adam.
3:1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Yehudah (Judaea), and Herod being tetrarch of Galil (Galilee), and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
3:2Ḥanan (Annas) and Kayafa (Caiaphas) being the high priests, the word of God came unto Yoḥanan (John) the son of Zecharyah (Zacharias) in the wilderness.
3:3And he came into all the country about Yarden (Jordan), preaching the immersion of repentance for the remission of sins;
3:4As it is written in the book of the words of Yesha’yahu (Esaias) the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.
3:5Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
3:6And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.”
3:7Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be immersed of him, “O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Ἔλεγεν οὖν τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ὄχλοις βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ, Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;
3:8Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, ‘We have Avraham (Abraham) to our father’: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Avraham.
3:9And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”
3:10And the people asked him, saying, “What shall we do then?”
καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ ὄχλοι, λέγοντες, Τί οὖν ποιήσομεν;
3:11He answers and says unto them, “He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.”
3:12Then came also publicans to be immersed, and said unto him, “Rabbi, what shall we do?”
ἦλθον δὲ καὶ τελῶναι βαπτισθῆναι, καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν, Διδάσκαλε, τί ποιήσομεν;
3:13And he said unto them, “Exact no more than that which is appointed you.”
3:14And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, “And what shall we do?” And he said unto them, “Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.”
3:15And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of Yoḥanan, whether he were the Messiah, or not;
3:16Yoḥanan answered, saying unto them all, “I indeed immerse you with water; but one mightier than I comes, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: He shall immerse you with the Holy Spirit and with fire:
3:17Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor, and will gather the wheat into His garner; but the chaff He will burn with fire unquenchable.”
3:18And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
3:19But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
3:20Added yet this above all, that he shut up Yoḥanan in prison.
3:21Now when all the people were immersed, it came to pass, that Yeshua (Jesus) also being immersed, and praying, the heaven was opened,
3:22And the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
