Luke, Chapter 5

Yeshua teaches from Shim’on’s ship by the lake of Ginesar, gives a great catch of fish, and calls Shim’on, Ya’akov and Yoḥanan to follow Him. He cleanses a leper, forgives and heals a man sick of the palsy, calls the publican Levi, and answers a question about fasting with the parables of the garment and the wine.

5:1And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon Him to hear the word of God, He stood by the lake of Ginesar (Gennesaret),

5:2And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets.

5:3And He entered into one of the ships, which was Shim’on’s (Simon’s), and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And He sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.

5:4Now when He had left speaking, He said unto Shim’on, “Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.”

5:5And Shim’on answering said unto Him, “Teacher, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.”

5:6And when they had this done, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net broke.

5:7And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

5:8When Shim’on Peter saw it, he fell down at the knees of Yeshua (Jesus), saying, “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Master.”

5:9For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

5:10And so was also Ya’akov (James), and Yoḥanan (John), the sons of Zavdai (Zebedee), which were partners with Shim’on. And Yeshua said unto Shim’on, “Fear not; from henceforth you shall catch men.”

5:11And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed Him.

A leper is cleansed

5:12And it came to pass, when He was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Yeshua fell on his face, and besought Him, saying, “Master, if You will, You can make me clean.”

5:13And He put forth His hand, and touched him, saying, “I will: be clean.” And immediately the leprosy departed from him.

5:14And He charged him to tell no man: “But go, and show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing, according as Moshe (Moses) commanded, for a testimony unto them.”

5:15But so much the more went there a fame abroad of Him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities.

5:16And He withdrew Himself into the wilderness, and prayed.

A man sick of the palsy

5:17And it came to pass on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the Torah sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galil (Galilee), and Yehudah (Judaea), and Yerushalayim (Jerusalem): and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.

5:18And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before Him.

5:19And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Yeshua.

5:20And when He saw their faith, He said unto him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

5:21And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this which speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?”

καὶ ἤρξαντο διαλογίζεσθαι οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, λέγοντες, Τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὃς λαλεῖ βλασφημίας; τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας, εἰ μὴ μόνος ὁ Θεός;

5:22But when Yeshua perceived their thoughts, He answering said unto them, “What reason you in your hearts?

ἐπιγνοὺς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοὺς διαλογισμοὺς αὐτῶν ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς, Τί διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν;

5:23Whether is easier, to say, ‘Your sins be forgiven you’; or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’?

τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν, Ἀφέωνταί σοι αἱ ἁμαρτίαι σου, ἢ εἰπεῖν, Ἔγειραι καὶ περιπάτει;

5:24But that you may know that the Son of man has power upon earth to forgive sins,” (He said unto the sick of the palsy,) “I say unto you, Arise, and take up your couch, and go into your house.”

5:25And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

5:26And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today.”

The call of Levi

5:27And after these things He went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and He said unto him, “Follow Me.”

5:28And he left all, rose up, and followed Him.

5:29And Levi made Him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

5:30But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners?”

καὶ ἐγόγγυζον οἱ γραμματεῖς αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ, λέγοντες, Διατί μετὰ τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίετε καὶ πίνετε;

5:31And Yeshua answering said unto them, “They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

5:32I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

A question about fasting

5:33And they said unto Him, “Why do the disciples of Yoḥanan fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but Yours eat and drink?”

οἱ δὲ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν, Διατί οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου νηστεύουσι πυκνὰ, καὶ δεήσεις ποιοῦνται, ὁμοίως καὶ οἱ τῶν Φαρισαίων· οἱ δὲ σοὶ ἐσθίουσι καὶ πίνουσιν;

5:34And He said unto them, “Can you make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?

5:35But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.”

5:36And He spoke also a parable unto them; “No man puts a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new makes a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agrees not with the old.

5:37And no man puts new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.

5:38But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.

5:39No man also having drunk old wine straightway desires new: for he says, ‘The old is better.’”

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
