Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 58
Hashem tells the prophet to cry aloud and show the house of Ya’akov their sins: their fasting goes with strife and oppression, while the fast He chooses is to free the oppressed and feed the hungry; those who call the sabbath a delight are promised light, guidance and the heritage of Ya’akov.
58:1Cry aloud, spare not, lift up your voice like a shofar (trumpet), and show My people their transgression, and the house of Ya’akov (Jacob) their sins.
58:2Yet they seek Me daily, and delight to know My ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of Me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
58:3“Wherefore have we fasted,” say they, “and You see not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and You take no knowledge?” Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exact all your labours.
58:4Behold, you fast for strife and debate, and to strike with the fist of wickedness: you shall not fast as you do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
58:5Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? will you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Hashem?
58:6Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?
58:7Is it not to deal your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor that are cast out to your house? when you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you hide not yourself from your own flesh?
58:8Then shall your light break forth as the morning, and your health shall spring forth speedily: and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of Hashem shall be your rereward.
58:9Then shall you call, and Hashem shall answer; you shall cry, and He shall say, “Here I am.” If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
58:10And if you draw out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall your light rise in obscurity, and your darkness be as the noonday:
58:11And Hashem shall guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and make fat your bones: and you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
58:12And they that shall be of you shall build the old waste places: you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; and you shall be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.
58:13If you turn away your foot from the sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of Hashem, honourable; and shall honour him, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words:
58:14Then shall you delight yourself in Hashem; and I will cause you to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed you with the heritage of Ya’akov your father: for the mouth of Hashem has spoken it.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
