Deuteronomy, Chapter 8

Moshe calls Yisrael to remember the forty years in the wilderness, when Hashem humbled them and fed them with manna, describes the good land they are entering, and warns them not to forget Hashem when they are full and say that their own might has gotten them wealth.

Remember the way in the wilderness

8:1All the commandments which I command you this day you shall observe to do, that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which Hashem swore unto your fathers.

8:2And you shall remember all the way which Hashem your God led you these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, and to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments, or not.

Written and read. Written מצותו, read מִצְוֺתָ֖יו. The Hebrew shows the written form (ketiv); the English follows the reading (qere).

8:3And He humbled you, and allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna, which you did not know, neither did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of Hashem does man live.

8:4Your clothing did not wear out upon you, neither did your foot swell, these forty years.

8:5You shall also consider in your heart that, as a man chastens his son, so Hashem your God chastens you.

8:6Therefore you shall keep the commandments of Hashem your God, to walk in His ways, and to fear Him.

A good land

8:7For Hashem your God brings you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

8:8a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig trees and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey;

8:9a land in which you shall eat bread without scarcity, you shall not lack anything in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you may dig brass.

8:10When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless Hashem your God for the good land which He has given you.

Beware lest you forget Hashem

8:11Beware that you do not forget Hashem your God, by not keeping His commandments, and His judgments, and His statutes, which I command you this day;

8:12lest, when you have eaten and are full, and have built good houses and dwelt in them,

8:13and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied,

8:14then your heart is lifted up, and you forget Hashem your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), out of the house of bondage;

8:15who led you through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought you forth water out of the rock of flint;

8:16who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know, that He might humble you, and that He might prove you, to do you good at your latter end;

8:17and you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth.’

Hashem gives power to get wealth

8:18But you shall remember Hashem your God, for it is He that gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto your fathers, as it is this day.

8:19And it shall be, if you do at all forget Hashem your God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.

8:20As the nations which Hashem destroys before you, so shall you perish, because you would not hearken unto the voice of Hashem your God.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
