Deuteronomy, Chapter 6

Moshe gives the commandment to fear Hashem and keep His statutes, proclaims that Hashem is one and is to be loved with all the heart, soul and might, warns against forgetting Him in the good land or testing Him as at Massah, and tells what to answer a son who asks.

Fear Hashem and keep his statutes

6:1Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments, which Hashem your God commanded to teach you, that you might do them in the land into which you go over to possess it;

6:2that you might fear Hashem your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I command you, you, and your son, and your son’s son, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged.

6:3Hear therefore, O Yisrael (Israel), and observe to do it; that it may be well with you, and that you may increase mightily, as Hashem, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

Hear, O Yisrael

6:4Hear, O Yisrael: Hashem our God, Hashem is one.

6:5And you shall love Hashem your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.

6:6And these words, which I command you this day, shall be in your heart;

6:7and you shall teach them diligently unto your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

6:8And you shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

6:9And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house, and on your gates.

Do not forget Hashem in the land

6:10And it shall be, when Hashem your God shall have brought you into the land which He swore unto your fathers, to Avraham (Abraham), to Yitzḥak (Isaac), and to Yaakov (Jacob), to give you great and goodly cities, which you did not build,

6:11and houses full of all good things, which you did not fill, and wells dug, which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees, which you did not plant; and you shall eat and be full;

6:12then beware lest you forget Hashem, who brought you forth out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), out of the house of bondage.

6:13You shall fear Hashem your God, and serve Him, and shall swear by His name.

6:14You shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples which are round about you;

6:15for Hashem your God among you is a jealous God; lest the anger of Hashem your God be kindled against you, and He destroy you from off the face of the earth.

6:16You shall not test Hashem your God, as you tested Him in Massah.

6:17You shall diligently keep the commandments of Hashem your God, and His testimonies, and His statutes, which He has commanded you.

6:18And you shall do that which is right and good in the sight of Hashem, that it may be well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land which Hashem swore unto your fathers,

6:19to thrust out all your enemies from before you, as Hashem has spoken.

When your son asks

6:20When your son asks you in time to come, saying, ‘What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Hashem our God has commanded you?’

6:21then you shall say unto your son, ‘We were Par’oh’s (Pharaoh’s) bondmen in Mitzrayim; and Hashem brought us out of Mitzrayim with a mighty hand;

6:22and Hashem showed signs and wonders, great and grievous, upon Mitzrayim, upon Par’oh (Pharaoh), and upon all his household, before our eyes;

6:23and He brought us out from there, that He might bring us in, to give us the land which He swore unto our fathers.

6:24And Hashem commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Hashem our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.

6:25And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all this commandment before Hashem our God, as He has commanded us.’

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
