John, Chapter 12
Miryam anoints Yeshua’s feet in Beit Anyah, and the next day the crowds greet Him with palm branches as He rides into Yerushalayim. When Greeks seek Him, Yeshua speaks of His coming death, a voice answers from heaven, and He calls the people to believe in the light.
12:1Then Yeshua (Jesus) six days before the passover came to Beit Anyah (Bethany), where El’azar (Lazarus) was which had been dead, whom He raised from the dead.
12:2There they made Him a supper; and Marta (Martha) served: but El’azar was one of them that sat at the table with Him.
12:3Then took Miryam (Mary) a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Yeshua, and wiped His feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
12:4Then says one of His disciples, Yehudah Ish-Keriyot (Judas Iscariot), Shim’on’s (Simon’s) son, which should betray Him,
12:5“Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred denarii, and given to the poor?”
Διατί τοῦτο τὸ μύρον οὐκ ἐπράθη τριακοσίων δηναρίων, καὶ ἐδόθη πτωχοῖς;
12:6This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bore what was put therein.
12:7Then said Yeshua, “Let her alone: against the day of My burying has she kept this.
12:8For the poor always you have with you; but Me you have not always.”
12:9Much people of the Jews therefore knew that He was there: and they came not for Yeshua’s sake only, but that they might see El’azar also, whom He had raised from the dead.
12:10But the chief priests consulted that they might put El’azar also to death;
12:11Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Yeshua.
12:12On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Yeshua was coming to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem),
12:13Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet Him, and cried, “Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that comes in the name of the Lord.”
12:14And Yeshua, when He had found a young donkey, sat thereon; as it is written,
12:15“Fear not, daughter of Tziyon (Sion): behold, your King comes, sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
12:16These things understood not His disciples at the first: but when Yeshua was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things unto Him.
12:17The people therefore that was with Him when He called El’azar out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bore record.
12:18For this cause the people also met Him, for that they heard that He had done this miracle.
12:19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “Perceive you how you prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after Him.”
12:20And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast:
12:21The same came therefore to Philip, which was of Beit Tzaidah (Bethsaida) of Galil (Galilee), and desired him, saying, “Sir, we would see Yeshua.”
12:22Philip comes and tells Andrew: and again Andrew and Philip tell Yeshua.
12:23And Yeshua answered them, saying, “The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.
12:24Truly, truly, I say unto you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abides alone: but if it die, it brings forth much fruit.
12:25He that loves his life shall lose it; and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
12:26If any man serve Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there shall also My servant be: if any man serve Me, him will My Father honour.
12:27Now is My soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.
12:28Father, glorify Your name.” Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”
12:29The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, “An angel spoke to Him.”
12:30Yeshua answered and said, “This voice came not because of Me, but for your sakes.
12:31Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
12:32And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto Me.”
12:33This He said, signifying what death He should die.
12:34The people answered Him, “We have heard out of the Torah that Messiah abides for ever: and how say You, ‘The Son of man must be lifted up’? who is this Son of man?”
ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ ὄχλος, Ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου ὅτι ὁ Χριστὸς μένει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα· καὶ πῶς σὺ λέγεις ὅτι Δεῖ ὑψωθῆναι τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου; τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου;
12:35Then Yeshua said unto them, “Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walks in darkness knows not whither he goes.
12:36While you have light, believe in the light, that you may be the children of light.” These things spoke Yeshua, and departed, and did hide Himself from them.
12:37But though He had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on Him:
12:38That the saying of Yesha’yahu (Esaias) the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke, “Lord, who has believed our report? and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
ἵνα ὁ λόγος Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου πληρωθῇ, ὃν εἶπε, Κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσε τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν; καὶ ὁ βραχίων Κυρίου τίνι ἀπεκαλύφθη;
12:39Therefore they could not believe, because that Yesha’yahu said again,
12:40“He has blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.”
12:41These things said Yesha’yahu, when he saw His glory, and spoke of Him.
12:42Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on Him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
12:43For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
12:44Yeshua cried and said, “He that believes on Me, believes not on Me, but on Him that sent Me.
12:45And he that sees Me sees Him that sent Me.
12:46I am come a light into the world, that whoever believes on Me should not abide in darkness.
12:47And if any man hear My words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
12:48He that rejects Me, and receives not My words, has one that judges him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
12:49For I have not spoken of Myself; but the Father which sent Me, He gave Me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
12:50And I know that His commandment is life everlasting: whatever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto Me, so I speak.”

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
