Zechariah, Chapter 9

The burden of the word of Hashem against Chadrach, Damesek, Chamat, Tzor, Tzidon and the cities of the Pelishtim; the King of the daughter of Tziyon comes lowly, riding upon a donkey, and speaks peace to the heathen, and Hashem sets free the prisoners of hope and saves His people as a flock.

9:1The burden of the word of Hashem in the land of Chadrach (Hadrach), and Damesek (Damascus) shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward Hashem.

9:2And Chamat (Hamath) also shall border thereby; Tzor (Tyrus), and Tzidon (Zidon), though it be very wise.

9:3And Tzor did build herself a strong hold, and heaped up silver as the dust, and fine gold as the mire of the streets.

9:4Behold, the Lord will cast her out, and He will strike her power in the sea; and she shall be devoured with fire.

9:5Ashkelon shall see it, and fear; Azzah (Gaza) also shall see it, and be very sorrowful, and Ekron; for her expectation shall be ashamed; and the king shall perish from Azzah, and Ashkelon shall not be inhabited.

9:6And a bastard shall dwell in Ashdod, and I will cut off the pride of the Pelishtim (Philistines).

9:7And I will take away his blood out of his mouth, and his abominations from between his teeth: but he that remains, even he, shall be for our God, and he shall be as a governor in Yehudah (Judah), and Ekron as a Yevusi (Jebusite).

9:8And I will encamp about My house because of the army, because of him that passes by, and because of him that returns: and no oppressor shall pass through them any more: for now have I seen with My eyes.

Your King comes unto you

9:9Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Tziyon (Zion); shout, O daughter of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem): behold, your King comes unto you: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon a donkey, and upon a colt the foal of a donkey.

9:10And I will cut off the chariot from Efrayim (Ephraim), and the horse from Yerushalayim, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from river even to the ends of the earth.

Prisoners of hope

9:11As for you also, by the blood of your covenant I have sent forth your prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.

9:12Turn you to the strong hold, you prisoners of hope: even today do I declare that I will render double unto you;

9:13When I have bent Yehudah for Me, filled the bow with Efrayim, and raised up your sons, O Tziyon, against your sons, O Yavan (Greece), and made you as the sword of a mighty man.

Hashem shall be seen over them

9:14And Hashem shall be seen over them, and His arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the Lord Hashem shall blow the shofar (trumpet), and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.

9:15Hashem of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.

9:16And Hashem their God shall save them in that day as the flock of His people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon His land.

9:17For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! grain shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Zechariah they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 1 and 2; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
