Text (469) 608-9944Isaiah, Chapter 6
In the year that king Uzziyahu died Yesha’yahu sees the Lord on a throne high and lifted up, with the seraphim crying holy; a live coal from the altar touches his lips, and he is sent to a people that will hear but not understand, until the land is utterly desolate and a holy seed remains.
6:1In the year that king Uzziyahu (Uzziah) died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple.
6:2Above it stood the seraphim: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
6:3And one cried unto another, and said, “Holy, holy, holy, is Hashem of hosts: the whole earth is full of His glory.”
6:4And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
6:5Then said I, “Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, Hashem of hosts.”
6:6Then flew one of the seraphim unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
6:7And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, “Lo, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away, and your sin purged.”
6:8Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then said I, “Here am I; send me.”
6:9And He said, “Go, and tell this people, ‘Hear you indeed, but understand not; and see you indeed, but perceive not.’
6:10Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.”
6:11Then said I, “Lord, how long?” And He answered, “Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
6:12And Hashem have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.
6:13But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.”
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
