John, Chapter 11
El’azar of Beit Anyah falls sick and dies. Yeshua comes to his sisters Marta and Miryam, tells Marta that He is the resurrection and the life, weeps, and calls El’azar out of the grave. The chief priests and Pharisees take counsel to put Yeshua to death, and He withdraws to Efrayim.
11:1Now a certain man was sick, named El’azar (Lazarus), of Beit Anyah (Bethany), the town of Miryam (Mary) and her sister Marta (Martha).
11:2(It was that Miryam which anointed the Master with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother El’azar was sick.)

11:3Therefore his sisters sent unto Him, saying, “Master, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
11:4When Yeshua (Jesus) heard that, He said, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.”
11:5Now Yeshua loved Marta, and her sister, and El’azar.
11:6When He had heard therefore that he was sick, He abode two days still in the same place where He was.
11:7Then after that says He to His disciples, “Let us go into Yehudah (Judaea) again.”
11:8His disciples say unto Him, “Rabbi, the Jews of late sought to stone You; and go You thither again?”
λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί, Ῥαββί, νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ;
11:9Yeshua answered, “Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbles not, because he sees the light of this world.
11:10But if a man walk in the night, he stumbles, because there is no light in him.”
11:11These things said He: and after that He says unto them, “Our friend El’azar sleeps; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.”
11:12Then said His disciples, “Master, if he sleep, he shall do well.”
11:13Howbeit Yeshua spoke of his death: but they thought that He had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.
11:14Then said Yeshua unto them plainly, “El’azar is dead.
11:15And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent you may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.”
11:16Then said Toma (Thomas), which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.”
11:17Then when Yeshua came, He found that he had lain in the grave four days already.
11:18Now Beit Anyah was nigh unto Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), about fifteen furlongs off:
11:19And many of the Jews came to Marta and Miryam, to comfort them concerning their brother.
11:20Then Marta, as soon as she heard that Yeshua was coming, went and met Him: but Miryam sat still in the house.
11:21Then said Marta unto Yeshua, “Master, if You had been here, my brother had not died.
11:22But I know, that even now, whatsoever You will ask of God, God will give it You.”
11:23Yeshua says unto her, “Your brother shall rise again.”
11:24Marta says unto Him, “I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
11:25Yeshua said unto her, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believes in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
11:26And whosoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Believe you this?”
καὶ πᾶς ὁ ζῶν καὶ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ, οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. πιστεύεις τοῦτο;
11:27She says unto Him, “Yea, Master: I believe that You are the Messiah, the Son of God, which should come into the world.”
11:28And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Miryam her sister secretly, saying, “The Teacher is come, and calls for you.”
11:29As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto Him.
11:30Now Yeshua was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Marta met Him.
11:31The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Miryam, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, “She goes unto the grave to weep there.”
11:32Then when Miryam was come where Yeshua was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying unto Him, “Master, if You had been here, my brother had not died.”
11:33When Yeshua therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, He groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,
11:34And said, “Where have you laid him?” They said unto Him, “Master, come and see.”
11:35Yeshua wept.
11:36Then said the Jews, “Behold how He loved him!”
11:37And some of them said, “Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?”
τινὲς δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν εἶπον, Οὐκ ἠδύνατο οὗτος, ὁ ἀνοίξας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ τυφλοῦ, ποιῆσαι ἵνα καὶ οὗτος μὴ ἀποθάνῃ;
11:38Yeshua therefore again groaning in Himself comes to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
11:39Yeshua said, “Take you away the stone.” Marta, the sister of him that was dead, says unto Him, “Master, by this time he stinks: for he has been dead four days.”
11:40Yeshua says unto her, “Said I not unto you, that, if you would believe, you should see the glory of God?”
λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Οὐκ εἶπόν σοι, ὅτι ἐὰν πιστεύσῃς, ὄψει τὴν δόξαν τοῦ Θεοῦ;
11:41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Yeshua lifted up His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
11:42And I knew that You hear Me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that You have sent Me.”
11:43And when He thus had spoken, He cried with a loud voice, “El’azar, come forth.”
11:44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Yeshua says unto them, “Loose him, and let him go.”
11:45Then many of the Jews which came to Miryam, and had seen the things which Yeshua did, believed on Him.
11:46But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Yeshua had done.
11:47Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, “What do we? for this man does many miracles.
11:48If we let Him thus alone, all men will believe on Him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.”
11:49And one of them, named Kayafa (Caiaphas), being the high priest that same year, said unto them, “You know nothing at all,
11:50Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.”
11:51And this spoke he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Yeshua should die for that nation;
11:52And not for that nation only, but that also He should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.
11:53Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put Him to death.
11:54Yeshua therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Efrayim (Ephraim), and there continued with His disciples.
11:55And the Jews’ passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Yerushalayim before the passover, to purify themselves.
11:56Then sought they for Yeshua, and spoke among themselves, as they stood in the temple, “What think you, that He will not come to the feast?”
ἐζήτουν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ ἔλεγον μετ’ ἀλλήλων ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἑστηκότες, Τί δοκεῖ ὑμῖν; ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἔλθῃ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν;
11:57Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where He were, he should show it, that they might take Him.

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
