Psalm 118

A psalm of thanks to Hashem, whose mercy endures for ever, who answered the psalmist in distress and helped him against the nations; the stone the builders refused became the head of the corner.

118:1O give thanks unto Hashem; for He is good: because His mercy endures for ever.

118:2Let Israel now say, that His mercy endures for ever.

118:3Let the house of Aharon (Aaron) now say, that His mercy endures for ever.

118:4Let them now that fear Hashem say, that His mercy endures for ever.

118:5I called upon Yah in distress: Yah answered me, and set me in a large place.

118:6Hashem is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

118:7Hashem takes my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.

118:8It is better to trust in Hashem than to put confidence in man.

118:9It is better to trust in Hashem than to put confidence in princes.

118:10All nations compassed me about: but in the name of Hashem will I destroy them.

118:11They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of Hashem I will destroy them.

118:12They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of Hashem I will destroy them.

118:13You have thrust greatly at me that I might fall: but Hashem helped me.

118:14Yah is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.

118:15The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of Hashem does valiantly.

118:16The right hand of Hashem is exalted: the right hand of Hashem does valiantly.

118:17I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of Yah.

118:18Yah has chastened me greatly: but He has not given me over unto death.

118:19Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise Yah:

118:20This gate of Hashem, into which the righteous shall enter.

118:21I will praise You: for You have heard me, and are become my salvation.

118:22The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

118:23This is Hashem’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

118:24This is the day which Hashem has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

118:25Save now, I beseech You, O Hashem: O Hashem, I beseech You, send now prosperity.

118:26Blessed be he that comes in the name of Hashem: we have blessed you out of the house of Hashem.

118:27God is Hashem, which has shown us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.

118:28You are my God, and I will praise You: You are my God, I will exalt You.

118:29O give thanks unto Hashem; for He is good: for His mercy endures for ever.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
