John, Chapter 13
Before the passover Yeshua washes His disciples’ feet and tells them to do as He has done. He foretells that one of them will betray Him and gives the sop to Yehudah Ish-Keriyot, gives a new commandment to love one another, and tells Peter he will deny Him three times.
13:1Now before the feast of the passover, when Yeshua (Jesus) knew that His hour was come that He should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved His own which were in the world, He loved them unto the end.
13:2And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Yehudah Ish-Keriyot (Judas Iscariot), Shim’on’s (Simon’s) son, to betray Him;
13:3Yeshua knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He was come from God, and went to God;
13:4He rises from supper, and laid aside His garments; and took a towel, and girded Himself.
13:5After that He pours water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith He was girded.
13:6Then comes He to Shim’on Peter: and Peter says unto Him, “Master, do You wash my feet?”
ἔρχεται οὖν πρὸς Σίμωνα Πέτρον· καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ἐκεῖνος, Κύριε, σύ μου νίπτεις τοὺς πόδας;
13:7Yeshua answered and said unto him, “What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter.”
13:8Peter says unto Him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Yeshua answered him, “If I wash you not, you have no part with Me.”
13:9Shim’on Peter says unto Him, “Master, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.”
13:10Yeshua says to him, “He that is washed needs not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and you are clean, but not all.”
13:11For He knew who should betray Him; therefore said He, “You are not all clean.”
13:12So after He had washed their feet, and had taken His garments, and was set down again, He said unto them, “Know you what I have done to you?
Ὅτε οὖν ἔνιψε τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν, καὶ ἔλαβε τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ, ἀναπεσὼν πάλιν, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Γινώσκετε τί πεποίηκα ὑμῖν;
13:13You call Me Rabbi and Master: and you say well; for so I am.
13:14If I then, your Master and Teacher, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
13:15For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
13:16Truly, truly, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his master; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.
13:17If you know these things, happy are you if you do them.
13:18I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He that eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’
13:19Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am He.
13:20Truly, truly, I say unto you, He that receives whomever I send receives Me; and he that receives Me receives Him that sent Me.”
13:21When Yeshua had thus said, He was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray Me.”
13:22Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom He spoke.
13:23Now there was leaning on Yeshua’s bosom one of His disciples, whom Yeshua loved.
13:24Shim’on Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom He spoke.
13:25He then lying on Yeshua’s breast says unto Him, “Master, who is it?”
ἐπιπεσὼν δὲ ἐκεῖνος ἐπὶ τὸ στῆθος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ, λέγει αὐτῷ, Κύριε, τίς ἐστιν;
13:26Yeshua answered, “He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it.” And when He had dipped the sop, He gave it to Yehudah Ish-Keriyot, the son of Shim’on.
13:27And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Yeshua unto him, “That you do, do quickly.”
13:28Now no man at the table knew for what intent He spoke this unto him.
13:29For some of them thought, because Yehudah had the bag, that Yeshua had said unto him, “Buy those things that we have need of against the feast;” or, that he should give something to the poor.
13:30He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.
13:31Therefore, when he was gone out, Yeshua said, “Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in Him.
13:32If God be glorified in Him, God shall also glorify Him in Himself, and shall straightway glorify Him.
13:33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek Me: and as I said unto the Jews, ‘Whither I go, you cannot come;’ so now I say to you.
13:34A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
13:35By this shall all men know that you are My disciples, if you have love one to another.”
13:36Shim’on Peter said unto Him, “Master, whither go You?” Yeshua answered him, “Whither I go, you cannot follow Me now; but you shall follow Me afterwards.”
13:37Peter said unto Him, “Master, why cannot I follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.”
13:38Yeshua answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Truly, truly, I say unto you, The cock shall not crow, till you have denied Me thrice.”

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
