1 Peter, Chapter 2

Peter calls the believers to desire the sincere milk of the word and to come to Messiah, the living stone, as living stones built into a spiritual house and a royal priesthood. He urges good conduct among the Gentiles, submission to rulers and to masters, and following Messiah, who suffered for us.

2:1Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,

2:2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that you may grow thereby:

2:3If so be you have tasted that the Master is gracious.

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 34:9 (KJV 34:8).
The living stone

2:4To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

2:5You also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah.

2:6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, “Behold, I lay in Tziyon (Sion) a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believes on Him shall not be confounded.”

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 28:16.

2:7Unto you therefore which believe He is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 118:22.

2:8And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 8:14.

2:9But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvellous light:

2:10Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Tenakh. Quotes Hosea 2:25 (KJV 2:23).
Good conduct among the Gentiles

2:11Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

2:12Having your conduct honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

Submission to rulers

2:13Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Master’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

2:14Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

2:15For so is the will of God, that with well doing you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:

2:16As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

2:17Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

Servants and the example of Messiah

2:18Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.

2:19For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.

2:20For what glory is it, if, when you be buffeted for your faults, you shall take it patiently? but if, when you do well, and suffer for it, you take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

2:21For even hereunto were you called: because Messiah also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:

2:22Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth:

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 53:9.

2:23Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judges righteously:

2:24Who His own self bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes you were healed.

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 53:5.

2:25For you were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 53:6.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
