Text (469) 608-9944Exodus, Chapter 19
In the third month Yisrael camps before mount Sinai; Hashem offers to make them a kingdom of priests and a holy nation, the people answer that they will do all He has spoken, they sanctify themselves for three days, and Hashem descends on the mount in fire, smoke and the sound of the trumpet.
19:1In the third month, when the children of Yisrael (Israel) had gone forth out of the land of Mitzrayim (Egypt), on the same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.
19:2For they had departed from Refidim (Rephidim), and had come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Yisrael camped before the mount.
19:3And Moshe (Moses) went up unto God, and Hashem called unto him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus shall you say to the house of Yaakov (Jacob), and tell the children of Yisrael:
19:4You have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto Myself.
19:5Now therefore, if you will obey My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then you shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all peoples; for all the earth is Mine;
19:6and you shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak unto the children of Yisrael.”
19:7And Moshe came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which Hashem commanded him.
19:8And all the people answered together, and said, “All that Hashem has spoken we will do.” And Moshe returned the words of the people unto Hashem.
19:9And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Behold, I come unto you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” And Moshe told the words of the people unto Hashem.
19:10And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Go unto the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes,
19:11and be ready for the third day; for on the third day Hashem will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.
19:12And you shall set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that you do not go up into the mount, or touch the border of it; whoever touches the mount shall surely be put to death.
19:13There shall not a hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live. When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mount.”
19:14And Moshe went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.
19:15And he said unto the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not come near your wives.”
19:16And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceedingly loud; so that all the people that were in the camp trembled.
19:17And Moshe brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the lower part of the mount.
19:18And mount Sinai was altogether in smoke, because Hashem descended upon it in fire; and the smoke of it ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
19:19And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and grew louder and louder, Moshe spoke, and God answered him by a voice.
19:20And Hashem came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount; and Hashem called Moshe up to the top of the mount; and Moshe went up.
19:21And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto Hashem to gaze, and many of them perish.
19:22And let the priests also, who come near to Hashem, sanctify themselves, lest Hashem break forth upon them.”
19:23And Moshe said unto Hashem, “The people cannot come up to mount Sinai; for You charged us, saying, Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it.”
19:24And Hashem said unto him, “Go, get down, and you shall come up, you, and Aharon (Aaron) with you; but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto Hashem, lest He break forth upon them.”
19:25So Moshe went down unto the people, and spoke unto them.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Exodus they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 7, 8, 20, 21 and 22; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
