Isaiah, Chapter 8

Yesha’yahu writes the name Maher-Shalal-Chash-Baz and his son is born, a sign that Damesek and Shomron will be spoiled by Ashur, whose waters will overflow Yehudah; the people are told to sanctify Hashem of hosts, not to seek those that have familiar spirits, and to turn to the Torah and to the testimony.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. This chapter has 23 verses; verse 23 here is 9:1 in most English Bibles.

8:1Moreover Hashem said unto me, “Take you a great roll, and write in it with a man’s pen concerning Maher-Shalal-Chash-Baz (Maher-shalal-hash-baz).”

8:2And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriyah (Uriah) the priest, and Zecharyahu (Zechariah) the son of Yevarechyahu (Jeberechiah).

8:3And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said Hashem to me, “Call his name Maher-Shalal-Chash-Baz.

8:4For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, ‘My father, and my mother,’ the riches of Damesek (Damascus) and the spoil of Shomron (Samaria) shall be taken away before the king of Ashur (Assyria).”

The waters of Shiloach

8:5Hashem spoke also unto me again, saying,

8:6“Forasmuch as this people refuses the waters of Shiloach (Shiloah) that go softly, and rejoice in Retzin (Rezin) and Remalyahu’s (Remaliah’s) son;

8:7Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Ashur, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:

8:8And he shall pass through Yehudah (Judah); he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of your land, O Immanu’el (Immanuel).”

8:9Associate yourselves, O you people, and you shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all you of far countries: gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces.

8:10Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

Sanctify Hashem of hosts

8:11For Hashem spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying,

8:12“Say you not, ‘A confederacy,’ to all them to whom this people shall say, ‘A confederacy’; neither fear you their fear, nor be afraid.

8:13Sanctify Hashem of hosts Himself; and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread.

8:14And He shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).

8:15And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.”

To the Torah and to the testimony

8:16Bind up the testimony, seal the Torah among my disciples.

8:17And I will wait upon Hashem, that hides His face from the house of Ya’akov (Jacob), and I will look for Him.

8:18Behold, I and the children whom Hashem has given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from Hashem of hosts, which dwells in mount Tziyon (Zion).

8:19And when they shall say unto you, “Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter:” should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?

8:20To the Torah and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

8:21And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.

8:22And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.

8:23Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first He lightly afflicted the land of Zevulun (Zebulun) and the land of Naftali (Naphtali), and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Yarden (Jordan), in Galil (Galilee) of the nations.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
