Psalm 34

David’s psalm from when he changed his behaviour before Avimelech, blessing Hashem who delivered him, calling others to taste and see that He is good, and teaching the fear of Hashem.

Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).

34:1A Psalm of David, when he changed his behaviour before Avimelech (Abimelech); who drove him away, and he departed.

34:2I will bless Hashem at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

34:3My soul shall make her boast in Hashem: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.

34:4O magnify Hashem with me, and let us exalt His name together.

34:5I sought Hashem, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

34:6They looked unto Him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.

34:7This poor man cried, and Hashem heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.

34:8The angel of Hashem encamps round about them that fear Him, and delivers them.

34:9O taste and see that Hashem is good: blessed is the man that trusts in Him.

34:10O fear Hashem, you His saints: for there is no want to them that fear Him.

34:11The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek Hashem shall not want any good thing.

34:12Come, you children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of Hashem.

34:13What man is he that desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good?

34:14Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking guile.

34:15Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

34:16The eyes of Hashem are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry.

34:17The face of Hashem is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

34:18The righteous cry, and Hashem hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.

34:19Hashem is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saves such as are of a contrite spirit.

34:20Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but Hashem delivers him out of them all.

34:21He keeps all his bones: not one of them is broken.

34:22Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.

34:23Hashem redeems the soul of His servants: and none of them that trust in Him shall be desolate.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
