Isaiah, Chapter 43

Hashem tells Ya’akov not to fear, for He has redeemed him and will gather his seed from east and west; Israel is called as His witnesses that there is no saviour beside Him; He will do a new thing in the wilderness, and He blots out Israel’s transgressions for His own sake, though they have wearied Him.

43:1But now thus says Hashem that created you, O Ya’akov (Jacob), and He that formed you, O Israel, “Fear not: for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name; you are Mine.

43:2When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you: when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon you.

43:3For I am Hashem your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour: I gave Mitzrayim (Egypt) for your ransom, Kush (Ethiopia) and Seva (Seba) for you.

43:4Since you were precious in My sight, you have been honourable, and I have loved you: therefore will I give men for you, and people for your life.

43:5Fear not: for I am with you: I will bring your seed from the east, and gather you from the west;

43:6I will say to the north, ‘Give up’; and to the south, ‘Keep not back’: bring My sons from far, and My daughters from the ends of the earth;

43:7Even every one that is called by My name: for I have created him for My glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.”

You are My witnesses

43:8Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears.

43:9Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and show us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified: or let them hear, and say, “It is truth.”

43:10You are My witnesses, says Hashem, and My servant whom I have chosen: that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He: before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after Me.

43:11I, even I, am Hashem; and beside Me there is no saviour.

43:12I have declared, and have saved, and I have showed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore you are My witnesses, says Hashem, that I am God.

43:13Yea, before the day was I am He; and there is none that can deliver out of My hand: I will work, and who shall hinder it?

I will do a new thing

43:14Thus says Hashem, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; “For your sake I have sent to Bavel (Babylon), and have brought down all their nobles, and the Kasdim (Chaldeans), whose cry is in the ships.

43:15I am Hashem, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.”

43:16Thus says Hashem, which makes a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters;

43:17Which brings forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are quenched as tow.

43:18“Remember you not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

43:19Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

43:20The beast of the field shall honour Me, the dragons and the owls: because I give waters in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen.

43:21This people have I formed for Myself; they shall show forth My praise.”

Blotted out for My own sake

43:22But you have not called upon Me, O Ya’akov; but you have been weary of Me, O Israel.

43:23You have not brought Me the small cattle of your burnt offerings; neither have you honoured Me with your sacrifices. I have not caused you to serve with an offering, nor wearied you with incense.

43:24You have bought Me no sweet cane with money, neither have you filled Me with the fat of your sacrifices: but you have made Me to serve with your sins, you have wearied Me with your iniquities.

43:25I, even I, am He that blots out your transgressions for My own sake, and will not remember your sins.

43:26Put Me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare you, that you may be justified.

43:27Your first father has sinned, and your teachers have transgressed against Me.

43:28Therefore I have profaned the princes of the sanctuary, and have given Ya’akov to the curse, and Israel to reproaches.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
