Mah TovuMa Tovu

How lovely are your tents, O Ya’akov, your dwelling places, O Yisra’el (Numbers 24:5). Through your abundant kindness I will enter your house, In awe I will bow down toward your Holy Sanctuary. HASHEM, I love the House where you dwell, and the place where your Glory resides. I shall prostrate myself and bow, bend the knee before HASHEM my Maker. As for me, may my prayers to you, HASHEM, be at the right time. O God, in your abundant righteousness, answer me with the truth of your Salvation.

The following Morning Blessings which precede the Morning Prayer / Shakharit (the Morning Shema and Amidah) are not considered a part of communal prayer by Talmudic Law, however, the normative Orthodox practice is that they are said in the synagogue before the Morning Shema.

The following should not be said communally, but individually before Shakharit. They can be done before the morning blessings on Shabbat.

The ritual hand-washing in Judaism is based on Torah command for the priests to wash their hands and feet before beginning their service in the temple. The following is a beautiful verse for meditation that can imbue this ceremony with meaning.

“Who will ascend upon HASHEM’s mount and who will stand in His Holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not taken My name in vain and has not sworn deceitfully. He shall receive a blessing from HASHEM and charity from the God of his salvation.” (Salmo 24:3-5)

One blesses before washing hands, whether before eating bread or a food that is dipped,
before reciting Shema or the Amidah prayer, or learning Torah before sunrise:

Blessed are you, HASHEM our God, King of the universe, who sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us regarding the lifting of hands.

Putting on Tallit GadolAl ponerse el talit gadol

The tallit is a fringed garment traditionally worn by religious Jews. The tallit has special twined and knotted fringes known as tzitzit attached to its four corners. The practice of wearing this garment is based on the following Torah passage: “Speak to the children of Yisra’el: Tell them to make fringes on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a tekheleth-blue thread in the fringe of the corners. And you shall have the fringes, that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of HASHEM and do them, and that you may not stray after your heart and your eyes after which you go whoring, so that you may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy for your God.”

Blessed are you, HASHEM our God, King of the universe, who sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us to wrap ourselves in tzitzit.

Barukh ata ADONAI, eloheh-nu melekh ha-olam, asher kideshanu b-mitsvotav v-tsivanu l-hit’atef b-tsitsit.

Donning TefillinAl ponerse los tefilín

The Torah mentions the mitzvah of tefillin four separate times (Exodus 13:1–10 & 11–16, Deuteronomy 6:4–9 & 11:13–21). Each of these texts is inscribed on parchment and placed into the tefillin which has four compartments, one for each passage. The commandment of tefillin can only be fulfilled from after dawn till sunset. Tefillin should not be worn on Shabbat, Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Passover, or Shavuot. It is only mandatory for men. Right handed individuals place tefillin on their left arm. A left handed individual puts the arm tefillin on his right arm. An ambidextrous person places it on the left arm. The box of the arm tefillin should be placed on the middle point of one's bicep pointing inward towards the heart. It should be roughly two finger‐breadths from the inner side of the elbow joint. After putting the arm tefillin on one's arm, but before wrapping it, bless:La Torá menciona la mitzvá de los tefilín en cuatro ocasiones distintas (Éxodo 13:1–10 y 11–16, Deuteronomio 6:4–9 y 11:13–21).

Blessed are you HASHEM our God, king of the universe, who sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us to don tefillin.

Barukh ata ADONAI, Elohenu melekh ha-olam, ashair qidesha-nu b-mitsvotav v-tsiva-nu leh-haniyakh tefilin.

There is no required amount of times one must wind the strap around one's arm. The strap must be able to reach the middle finger, wrap around it 3 times, and be tied.

Once one finished tying the arm tefillin strap in place, one then places the head tefillin on one's head. If an interruption that was unrelated to putting on tefillin was made between putting on the arm tefillin and putting on the head tefillin, one says the following blessing immediately before putting on the head tefillin:Una vez que se ha terminado de atar en su lugar la correa de los tefilín del brazo, se colocan los tefilín de la cabeza.

Blessed are you HASHEM our God, king of the universe, who sanctified us with his commandments and commanded us regarding the commandment of tefillin.

The box of the head tefillin should be positioned between the eyes on the hair just above the hair line. The knot of the head tefillin straps should be placed in the middle of the back of the head at the highest point on the neck right where the skull begins. The straps of the head tefillin should be long enough to encircle the head and descend down to one's naval or slightly above it.La caja de los tefilín de la cabeza debe colocarse entre los ojos, sobre el cabello, justo encima del nacimiento del pelo.

The straps that descend down from the head tefillin can be tucked in between one's undershirt and outer shirt to prevent the straps from causing distraction when bowing.

It is customary to recite the following verses when wrapping the tefillin around the fingers.

“I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me In righteousness and justice, In mercy and lovingkindness;
I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, And then you shall know that I am the HASHEM.
Hosea 2:19-20

«Te desposaré conmigo para siempre; sí, te desposaré conmigo en justicia y en derecho, en misericordia y en compasión;
Oseas 2:19-20

When removing tefillin, one should first remove the head tefillin and then the arm tefillin. The arm tefillin should not be placed below the head tefillin when placing tefillin in a container.

The Sages praised the daily recitation of Ps. 145‐150. The words in parenthesis are specified as being an addition made on Shabbat in R' Saadia Gaon's siddur, the oldest extant complete siddur we have. However, normative practice is that this Shabbat addition is said every day. This entire section known as 'pasuqeh d-zimra' is voluntary and was historically said before communal prayers began.

Congregation quietly says the next two blessings after the Shema, along with the Khazzan.

True and fair, established and enduring, upright and trustworthy, goodly and beautiful is this matter to us, our forefathers, our children, and all our generations, upon the first and upon the latter generations, it is an enduring word, a law which shall not pass away.

You may kiss and release the tzitzit.Puedes besar y soltar los tzitzit.

It is true! You are HASHEM our God, God of our forefathers; our King, King of our forefathers; our redeemer, and redeemer of our forefathers. This is your renown from of old, and we have no other God but you!

Second Blessing after the ShemaSegunda bendición después del Shemá

You are our forefathers' help from of old; you shield and deliver their children after them, in each and every generation. Happy is the man who heeds your commandments; who places your word, the Torah, upon his heart. It is true! You are your people's Lord and King, valiant to fight their fights. It is true! You are the first and the last; we have no savior but you! You redeemed us from Egypt; from the house of bondage you liberated us; and all their firstborn you killed. You split the Sea of Reeds, brought the cherished ones across, and water covered their foes - none remained.

For this the redeemed praised and exalted God. The cherished ones gave forth musical songs of praise to the Self-Existent and eternal God, the King - High and lifted up! Awesome and great! He lowers the haughty; lifts the lowly; releases the bound; liberates the humble; And he answers his people when they cry out to him.

Ideally, the Amidah is first said in a whispered voice by everyone (one of the names for the Amidah is “The Whispered Prayer”), and then once out loud by the Khazzan if there is minyan. Rambam allows for a single reading out loud by the Khazzan, without repetition, for certain exceptions, as Baladee Yemenites do. Take three steps forward towards Yerushalayim to approach the King of Kings and whisper the Amidah with focused devotion, and then the Khazzan will repeat the Amidah out loud.

Moshe shall rejoice at the giving of his portion, for you called him ‘faithful servant’. A crown of splendor you placed upon his head when he stood before you on Mt. Sinai. He brought down two stone tablets in his hands, and Shabbat observance was written therein; and thus it is written in your Torah:

Shenay lukhot avanim horid b-yado, v-katuv bahem shemirat shabbat. V-khen katuv b-toratekha,

“The children of Yisra'el shall guard the Shabbat, to do the Shabbat for generations to come, an everlasting covenant. It is a covenant between myself and the children of Yisra'el forever; For in six days HASHEM made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.”

On Mt. Sinai You commanded the Shabbat to Moshe: 'remember and keep;' and regarding it You commanded us, HASHEM our God, to properly do the additional (musaf) sacrifice. May it be favorable before You, HASHEM our God, that You bring us up to our Land and plant us in our borders. We shall make our obligatory sacrifice before You, as You wrote for us in Your Torah by the hand of Moshe Your servant.

...for the miracles, the mighty deeds, the acts of deliverance, and for the redemption that you wrought for our ancestors in those days at this season: in the days of Matityah ben Yohanan the Hasmonian high priest and his sons, when the wicked Hellenic kingdom rose against your people to nullify your Torah, and to cause them to transgress the statutes of your will.

In your abundant compassion you rose up for them in their time of distress; You defended their right and fought their fight and avenged the wrong done to them; You gave mighty warriors into the hands of the weak, the many into the hands of the few, the profane into the hands of the pure, the wicked into the hands of the righteous, and the depraved into the hands of those who uphold your Torah; You made your name great, and for your people Yisra’el you did a wondrous act and miracles.

You caused his actions to fall on his head; he and his sons they hung on a tree.

Our God, God of our forefathers, bless us with the three-fold blessing of the Torah, given to Aharon and his sons, the priests of Your holy people, as it is stated:

Priestly Blessing when Kohanim are PresentBendición sacerdotal cuando hay Kohanim presentes

Kohanim begin making their way to the front once the Khazzan begins the blessing “Reseh.” They wait standing in the front facing the ark with their hands in a fist. Once the leader finishes the “Modim” blessing, the Kohanim then turn toward the congregation, stretch out their fingers, and lift their hands shoulder high. If only one Kohen is present, he says the first word of “Birkath Kohanim” of his own accord. If more than one Kohen is present, the leader calls out “Kohanim,” and the Kohanim then respond “yevarekhkha.” The remainder they repeat word for word after the Khazzan:Los Kohanim comienzan a pasar al frente cuando el jazán empieza la bendición «Retzé».

HASHEM bless you and keep you; (Amen)
HASHEM make His countenance shine upon you,
and be gracious to you; (Amen)
HASHEM lift up His countenance upon you,
and grant you peace. (Amen)

HASHEM te bendiga y te guarde; (Amén)
HASHEM haga resplandecer su rostro sobre ti,
y tenga de ti misericordia; (Amén)
HASHEM alce su rostro sobre ti,
y te conceda paz. (Amén)

Once the Khazzan begins reciting “Sim Shalom,” the Kohanim then turn their faces toward the ark with their hands in a fist. They should not leave until the Khazzan completes the “Sim Shalom” blessing.

Establish peace, goodness, and blessing upon us, grace, loving-kindness, and compassion; and bless us all with the light of your countenance; for from the light of your countenance you have given us, O HASHEM our God, Torah and life, love and devoted acts of kindness, righteousness, and peace; and it is good in your eyes to bless your people Yisra'el at every moment with peace. Blessed are you HASHEM, who blesses his people Yisra'el with peace. *Amen.* (*Say while bowing)

“Upon completing the Amidah, one bends down, takes three steps back while remaining bent down, ‘gives peace’ to his left and to his right, and then lifts his head from the bow.” (Hil. Tefila 5,11) Halakha does not require that any specific words be said while ‘giving peace.’ Indeed, R’ Saadia Gaon writes that this ‘giving peace’ is no more than a silent nodding of the head to the left and the right. For one who desires to verbally ‘give peace,’ you may use the ancient custom as reported by the Rif (on the right), or the one that is commonly today (on the left):«Al terminar la Amidá, uno se inclina, da tres pasos hacia atrás permaneciendo inclinado, “da la paz” a su izquierda y a su derecha, y luego levanta la cabeza de la reverencia». (Hil.

When praying without a minyan , one continues with “Prostration & Supplication,” prostration flat on the ground. If praying with a minyan, one remains standing in place the duration of the repetition of the Amida, attentive to the words of the Khazzan, answering “Amen” at the end of each blessing.

When the Khazzan completes the repetition of the Amida, the entire congregation sits on the ground, fall on their faces, and supplicate according to their desire. They then lift their heads and supplicate a bit more while sitting. One praying without a minyan does likewise. (Hil. (Hil. Tefilá 5,13‐15; 7,17; 9,5)

An esteemed individual should not press his face to the ground while supplicating in public; Rather, he should tilt his head a bit while prostrating. (Hil. (Hil. Tefilá 5,15)

The Torah forbids full prostration upon hewn stone outside the Temple premises. By Rabbinic decree, it is forbidden to press one’s face into hewn stone even if not fully prostrated. “Thus, all Yisra'el have the practice to lay out mats in their stone‐ floored synagogues.” (Hil.

Public reading from a Torah scroll is only done with a minyan. Moshe Rabenu established the practice that Torah is read every Monday and Thursday morning. On Mondays, Thursdays, during Hanukkah, Purim, and the fast days, the Torah reading is distributed among 3 readers; neither more nor less. On New Moons and the intermediate days of Pesakh and Sukkot, it is distributed among 4 readers. The practice of singing songs while bringing out and returning the Torah scroll is dependent on the custom of each congregation. We have included our customary songs: Ayn Kamokha, Vaiy’hee Been’sowa, V-zot Ha-tora, Etz Khai’yim, Ayn Kelo’henu, Adon Olam, Alenu. (See further: Hil.

Ayn KamokhaEin Kamoja

There is none like you among the gods, HASHEM, and there is nothing like your works. Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion is throughout all generations. HASHEM reigns, HASHEM has reigned, HASHEM will reign for ever and ever. HASHEM will give strength unto his people, HASHEM will bless his people with peace.

Vaiy’hee Been’sowaVayehí Binsoa

The English of Vaiy’hee been’sowa (When the Ark Would Travel) based on Numbers 10:35, Isaiah 2:3, can be recited, and then the processional through the congregation begins, which can be done to its singing. In the processional we pay homage to the Torah, the written word of God. As the Torah passes by, a traditional custom is to kiss the Torah by placing a Tallit corner, Siddur, Bible, or even one's hand, on the cover of the Torah, and then kissing that which we used to touch the Torah.

When the Ark would travel, Moshe would say, 'Arise HASHEM, and let your enemies be scattered, and let them that hate you flee from you.' For from Zion will go forth the Torah, and the word of HASHEM from Yerushalayim. Blessed is he, Who in his holiness, gave the Torah to his people Yisra'el.

Vaiy’hee been’sowa ha-aron va-yomair mosheh: Quma ADONAI v-yafu’tsu oy’yeveh-kha, v-yanu’su meh’saneh-kha mipaneh-kha.
Barukh sheh-natan torah, leh-amo yisra’el biqdu’shato.

The Eternal TorahLa Torá eterna

King David wrote, The Torah of HASHEM is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of HASHEM is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of HASHEM are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of HASHEM is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of HASHEM is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of HASHEM are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. (Salmo 19:7-10)

Yeshua said, “Don’t think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete. Yes indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud or a stroke will pass from the Torah — not until everything that must happen has happened. So whoever disobeys the least of these mitzvot and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But whoever obeys them and so teaches will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness is far greater than that of the Torah-teachers and P’rushim, you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of Heaven!” No he venido a abolir sino a completar. (Mateo 5:17-20, CJB)

The prophets declared, “Bind up the testimony and seal the Torah among my disciples...To the Torah and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” (Isaiah 8:16,20) “This is what HASHEM says: ‘Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you shall find rest for your souls.’”

Everyone remains standing, the Torah is lifted up so that the Congregation can view the text,
V’zote haTorah (And this is the Torah) may be chanted while everyone points to the Torah with their little finger. The Ashkenazi custom is to do this after the Torah reading. Sephardim and Hasidim do it before-hand.

And this is the Torah that Moshe placed before the children of Yisra'el, at the command of HASHEM, through the hand of Moshe.

The person who reads the haftara should first read at least three verses from the section of Torah read by the 7th reader who preceded him. He should then close the Torah scroll and, before continuing to read the haftara, recite the following blessing. If it was a New Moon, it is sufficient that he read from the 2nd Torah scroll before continuing with the haftara.
When the New Moon fell on a Shabbat, Isaiah 66,23 is the haftara.

Blessed are you HASHEM our God, king of the universe, who chose goodly prophets and favored their words spoken in truth. Blessed are you HASHEM, who chooses the Torah, and Moshe his servant, and Yisra'el his people, and prophets of truth and justice.

“A redeemer will come to Zion, and unto those of Ya’akov who turn from transgression, says HASHEM. And as for Me, this is My covenant with them, says HASHEM - My spirit that is upon you, and My words that I have placed in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your seed, nor out of the mouth of your seed's seed, says HASHEM, from this moment and forever more” (Isaiah 59:20-21).

A Prayer for the GovernmentOración por el gobierno

“Rabbi Chanina Segan Hacohanim says: pray for the well-being of the government, for without the fear of government, a man would consume his fellow alive.” - Pirkei Avot 3:2

The concept of praying for one’s government was introduced in 586 B.C.E. by the prophet Jeremiah after the first exile. David Abudarham first introduced this prayer into the modern siddurs in the 14th century. Jews have adopted different prayers for the governments of the countries in which they live. It is usually read aloud during the Shabbat morning after the Torah reading, but before the Torah is placed back into the ark.

Our God and God of our ancestors: Accept with mercy our prayer for our land and its government. Pour out your blessing on this land, on its President, judges, officers and officials, who work faithfully for the public good. Teach them from the laws of Your Torah, enlighten them with the rules of Your justice, so that peace, tranquility, happiness and freedom will never depart from our land.

God of all that lives, please bestow Your spirit on all the inhabitants of our land, and plant love, fellowship, peace and friendship between the different communities and faiths that dwell here. Uproot from their hearts all hate, animosity, jealousy and strife, in order to fulfill the longings of its people, who aspire for its dignity, and desire to see it as a light for all nations.

And so may it be God’s will that our land be a blessing for all who live on earth, and that fellowship and liberty will dwell between them. Establish soon the vision of your prophet: `Nation will not raise a sword against nation, and they will no longer learn war’, and, as it is said: `for all of them will know Me, from the smallest to the greatest’.Y así sea la voluntad de Elohim que nuestra tierra sea una bendición para todos los que viven en la tierra, y que la fraternidad y la libertad habiten entre ellos.

AlenuAleinu

The Alenu is a prayer expressing our gratitude and praise to God for making us his covenant people. It is customary to bow during the words "And we bend the knee and bow."
The V-ne’emar, the last verse at the end of the Alenu, speaks of the time of Messiah's coming, when he will be known in all the earth (Zechariah 14:9). Jews were forced to not sing the starred (*) part because of persecution.

It is our duty to praise the master of all, to ascribe greatness to the author of creation; for he made us unlike the nations of the lands, and has not placed us like the families of the earth. He has not made our portion like theirs, nor our lot like all their multitudes.
(For they prostrate to hot air and emptiness, and they pray to a god that does not save.*)
But we bend the knee and bow, and give thanks before the King of Kings, the Holy One, blessed be he.
He stretches out heaven and establishes earth's foundation, and the seat of his glory is in the heavens above, and the presence of his power is in the most exalted heights. He is our God, there is none other. True is our king, there is nothing beside him, as it is written in his Torah: “And you shall know this day and take to your heart, that HASHEM - he is God, in the heavens above and on the earth below - there is none other.” And it is said: “HASHEM shall be king over all the world; on that day HASHEM will be one and his name one!”

Master of the universe who reigned before any form was created, when creation came about by his will, then as King was his name proclaimed to be. And after all has ceased to be, he alone will reign in awesomeness. And he was, and he is, and shall be eternally in splendor. And he is first, and there is no second, to compare to him, to be his equal, without beginning and without end, his is the power and dominion. And he is my God, my living redeemer, and the rock of my pain in times of trouble, and he is my banner and a refuge for me, the portion of my cup on the day I call. In his hands I entrust my spirit, in the time I sleep or am awake, and with my spirit, my body, HASHEM is with me, I shall not fear.
