Matthew, Chapter 4
Yeshua is led into the wilderness, fasts forty days, and answers the devil’s three temptations with the words of Scripture. He settles in Kefar Naḥum, begins to preach repentance, calls Shim’on Peter, Andrew, Ya’akov and Yoḥanan to be fishers of men, and heals the sick throughout Galil.
4:1Then was Yeshua (Jesus) led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
4:2And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward hungry.
4:3And when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.”
4:4But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”
4:5Then the devil takes Him up into the holy city, and sets Him on a pinnacle of the temple,
4:6And says unto Him, “If You be the Son of God, cast Yourself down: for it is written, ‘He shall give His angels charge concerning You: and in their hands they shall bear You up, lest at any time You dash Your foot against a stone.’”
4:7Yeshua said unto him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”
4:8Again, the devil takes Him up into an exceeding high mountain, and shows Him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
4:9And says unto Him, “All these things will I give You, if You will fall down and worship me.”
4:10Then says Yeshua unto him, “Get you hence, Satan: for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’”
4:11Then the devil leaves Him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto Him.
4:12Now when Yeshua had heard that Yoḥanan (John) was cast into prison, He departed into Galil (Galilee);
4:13And leaving Natzrat (Nazareth), He came and dwelt in Kefar Naḥum (Capernaum), which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zevulun (Zabulon) and Naftali (Nephthalim):
4:14That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Yesha’yahu (Esaias) the prophet, saying,
4:15“The land of Zevulun, and the land of Naftali, by the way of the sea, beyond Yarden (Jordan), Galil of the Gentiles;
4:16The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.”
4:17From that time Yeshua began to preach, and to say, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
4:18And Yeshua, walking by the sea of Galil, saw two brethren, Shim’on (Simon) called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
4:19And He says unto them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
4:20And they straightway left their nets, and followed Him.
4:21And going on from thence, He saw other two brethren, Ya’akov (James) the son of Zavdai (Zebedee), and Yoḥanan his brother, in a ship with Zavdai their father, mending their nets; and He called them.
4:22And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed Him.
4:23And Yeshua went about all Galil, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
4:24And His fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto Him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with demons, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and He healed them.
4:25And there followed Him great multitudes of people from Galil, and from Decapolis, and from Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and from Yehudah (Judaea), and from beyond Yarden.

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
