Matthew, Chapter 3

Yoḥanan the Immerser preaches repentance in the wilderness of Yehudah and immerses the people in the Yarden, warning the Pharisees and Sadducees who come to him. Yeshua comes to be immersed, the Spirit of God descends upon Him like a dove, and a voice from heaven calls Him the beloved Son.

3:1In those days came Yoḥanan the Immerser (John the Baptist), preaching in the wilderness of Yehudah (Judaea),

3:2And saying, “Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

3:3For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Yesha’yahu (Esaias), saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight.”

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 40:3.

3:4And the same Yoḥanan had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

3:5Then went out to him Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and all Yehudah, and all the region round about Yarden (Jordan),

3:6And were immersed of him in Yarden, confessing their sins.

Warning to the Pharisees and Sadducees

3:7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his immersion, he said unto them, “O generation of vipers, who has warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

ἰδὼν δὲ πολλοὺς τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων ἐρχομένους ἐπὶ τὸ βάπτισμα αὐτοῦ, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;

3:8Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

3:9And think not to say within yourselves, ‘We have Avraham (Abraham) to our father’: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Avraham.

3:10And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

3:11I indeed immerse you with water unto repentance: but He that comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He shall immerse you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire:

3:12Whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor, and gather His wheat into the garner; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

Yeshua is immersed

3:13Then comes Yeshua (Jesus) from Galil (Galilee) to Yarden unto Yoḥanan, to be immersed of him.

3:14But Yoḥanan forbad Him, saying, “I have need to be immersed of You, and do You come to me?”

ὁ δὲ Ἰωάννης διεκώλυεν αὐτὸν λέγων, Ἐγὼ χρείαν ἔχω ὑπὸ σοῦ βαπτισθῆναι, καὶ σὺ ἔρχῃ πρός με;

3:15And Yeshua answering said unto him, “Permit it to be so now: for thus it becomes us to fulfil all righteousness.” Then he permitted Him.

3:16And Yeshua, when He was immersed, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him:

3:17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
