Galatians, Chapter 3

Paul asks the foolish Galatians whether they received the Spirit by the works of the Torah or by the hearing of faith. He shows from Avraham that those of faith are blessed with him, that the Torah given later does not cancel the promise, and that all who are in Messiah are Avraham’s seed.

Faith or the works of the Torah

3:1O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah has been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

Ὦ ἀνόητοι Γαλάται, τίς ὑμᾶς ἐβάσκανε τῇ ἀληθείᾳ μὴ πείθεσθαι, οἷς κατ’ ὀφθαλμοὺς Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς προεγράφη ἐν ὑμῖν ἐσταυρωμένος;

3:2This only would I learn of you, Received you the Spirit by the works of the Torah, or by the hearing of faith?

τοῦτο μόνον θέλω μαθεῖν ἀφ’ ὑμῶν, ἐξ ἔργων νόμου τὸ Πνεῦμα ἐλάβετε, ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως;

3:3Are you so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are you now made perfect by the flesh?

οὕτως ἀνόητοί ἐστε; ἐναρξάμενοι Πνεύματι νῦν σαρκὶ ἐπιτελεῖσθε;

3:4Have you suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.

3:5He therefore that ministers to you the Spirit, and works miracles among you, does He it by the works of the Torah, or by the hearing of faith?

ὁ οὖν ἐπιχορηγῶν ὑμῖν τὸ Πνεῦμα καὶ ἐνεργῶν δυνάμεις ἐν ὑμῖν, ἐξ ἔργων νόμου, ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως;

The blessing of Avraham

3:6Even as Avraham (Abraham) believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

Tenakh. Quotes Genesis 15:6.

3:7Know therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Avraham.

3:8And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Avraham, saying, “In you shall all nations be blessed.”

Tenakh. Quotes Genesis 12:3; Genesis 18:18.

3:9So then they which are of faith are blessed with faithful Avraham.

3:10For as many as are of the works of the Torah are under the curse: for it is written, “Cursed is every one that continues not in all things which are written in the book of the Torah to do them.”

Tenakh. Quotes Deuteronomy 27:26.

3:11But that no man is justified by the Torah in the sight of God, it is evident: for, “The just shall live by faith.”

Tenakh. Quotes Habakkuk 2:4.

3:12And the Torah is not of faith: but, “The man that does them shall live in them.”

Tenakh. Quotes Leviticus 18:5.

3:13Messiah has redeemed us from the curse of the Torah, being made a curse for us: for it is written, “Cursed is every one that hangs on a tree”:

Tenakh. Quotes Deuteronomy 21:23.

3:14That the blessing of Avraham might come on the Gentiles through Yeshua the Messiah; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The promise and the Torah

3:15Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannuls, or adds thereto.

3:16Now to Avraham and his seed were the promises made. He says not, “And to seeds,” as of many; but as of one, “And to your seed,” which is Messiah.

Tenakh. Quotes Genesis 13:15; Genesis 17:8.

3:17And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Messiah, the Torah, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.

3:18For if the inheritance be of the Torah, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Avraham by promise.

3:19Wherefore then serves the Torah? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

3:20Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

3:21Is the Torah then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness should have been by the Torah.

3:22But the scripture has concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Yeshua the Messiah might be given to them that believe.

Heirs through faith

3:23But before faith came, we were kept under the Torah, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

3:24Wherefore the Torah was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Messiah, that we might be justified by faith.

3:25But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

3:26For you are all the children of God by faith in Messiah Yeshua.

3:27For as many of you as have been immersed into Messiah have put on Messiah.

3:28There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for you are all one in Messiah Yeshua.

3:29And if you be Messiah’s, then are you Avraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
