Text (469) 608-9944Genesis, Chapter 13
Avram returns from Mitzrayim to Beit-El; strife between their herdsmen leads Lot to choose the plain of the Yarden and dwell toward Sedom, and Hashem promises Avram all the land and seed like the dust, and Avram settles at Mamre in Ḥevron.
13:1And Avram (Abram) went up out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negev.
13:2And Avram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.
13:3And he went on his journeys from the Negev even to Beit-El, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Beit-El and Ai,
13:4unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first; and there Avram called on the name of Hashem.
13:5And Lot also, who went with Avram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.
13:6And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together; for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
13:7And there was strife between the herdsmen of Avram’s cattle and the herdsmen of Lot’s cattle; and the Kena’ani and the Perizzi (Perizzite) dwelt then in the land.
13:8And Avram said unto Lot, “Let there be no strife, I pray you, between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brothers.
13:9Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself, I pray you, from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.”
13:10And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of the Yarden (Jordan), that it was well watered everywhere, before Hashem destroyed Sedom (Sodom) and Amorah (Gomorrah), even as the garden of Hashem, like the land of Mitzrayim, as you come unto Tzo’ar (Zoar).
13:11Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Yarden; and Lot journeyed east; and they separated themselves the one from the other.
13:12Avram dwelt in the land of Kena’an (Canaan), and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sedom.
13:13But the men of Sedom were wicked and sinners before Hashem exceedingly.
13:14And Hashem said unto Avram, after Lot was separated from him, “Lift up now your eyes, and look from the place where you are northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward;
13:15for all the land which you see, to you will I give it, and to your seed forever.
13:16And I will make your seed as the dust of the earth; so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall your seed also be numbered.
13:17Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its breadth; for I will give it unto you.”
13:18Then Avram moved his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Ḥevron (Hebron), and built there an altar unto Hashem.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
