Genesis, Chapter 18

Hashem appears to Avraham at Mamre, where he welcomes three men and they promise that Sarah will have a son, and she laughs; Hashem tells Avraham of the cry of Sedom and Amorah, and Avraham pleads for the city down to ten righteous.

Three visitors at Mamre

18:1And Hashem appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre; and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.

18:2And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and lo, three men stood by him; and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

18:3and said, “My Lord, if now I have found favor in Your sight, do not pass away, I pray You, from Your servant.

18:4Let a little water, I pray you, be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.

18:5And I will bring a morsel of bread, and refresh your hearts; after that you shall pass on, for this is why you have come to your servant.” And they said, “So do, as you have said.”

18:6And Avraham (Abraham) hurried into the tent unto Sarah, and said, “Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal; knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.”

18:7And Avraham ran unto the herd, and took a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hurried to prepare it.

18:8And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they ate.

Sarah laughs

18:9And they said unto him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “Behold, in the tent.”

18:10And he said, “I will certainly return unto you according to the time of life; and lo, Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.

18:11Now Avraham and Sarah were old and advanced in age; and it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

18:12Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”

18:13And Hashem said unto Avraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I truly bear a child, when I am old?’

18:14Is anything too hard for Hashem? At the appointed time I will return unto you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

18:15Then Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh”; for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

The cry of Sedom

18:16And the men rose up from there, and looked toward Sedom (Sodom); and Avraham went with them to send them on the way.

18:17And Hashem said, “Shall I hide from Avraham that thing which I do,

18:18seeing that Avraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

18:19For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of Hashem, to do righteousness and justice; that Hashem may bring upon Avraham that which He has spoken of him.”

18:20And Hashem said, “Because the cry of Sedom and Amorah (Gomorrah) is great, and because their sin is very grievous,

18:21I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which has come unto Me; and if not, I will know.”

18:22And the men turned their faces from there, and went toward Sedom; but Avraham stood yet before Hashem.

Avraham pleads for Sedom

18:23And Avraham drew near, and said, “Will You also destroy the righteous with the wicked?

18:24Perhaps there are fifty righteous within the city; will You also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are in it?

18:25Far be it from You to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do justly?”

18:26And Hashem said, “If I find in Sedom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.”

18:27And Avraham answered and said, “Behold now, I have taken it upon me to speak unto the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.

18:28Perhaps there shall lack five of the fifty righteous; will You destroy all the city for lack of five?” And He said, “If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.”

18:29And he spoke unto Him yet again, and said, “Perhaps there shall be forty found there.” And He said, “I will not do it for the forty’s sake.”

18:30And he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: perhaps there shall thirty be found there.” And He said, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.”

18:31And he said, “Behold now, I have taken it upon me to speak unto the Lord: perhaps there shall be twenty found there.” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.”

18:32And he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: perhaps ten shall be found there.” And He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.”

18:33And Hashem went His way, as soon as He had finished speaking with Avraham; and Avraham returned unto his place.

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
