Romans, Chapter 3

Paul asks what advantage the Jew has, and answers that to them were committed the oracles of God, whose faithfulness stands. Citing the Scriptures, he shows that Jews and Gentiles are all under sin, and that the righteousness of God is given through faith in Yeshua the Messiah to all who believe.

The faithfulness of God

3:1What advantage then has the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?

Τί οὖν τὸ περισσὸν τοῦ Ἰουδαίου, ἢ τίς ἡ ὠφέλεια τῆς περιτομῆς;

3:2Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

3:3For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?

τί γὰρ εἰ ἠπίστησάν τινες; μὴ ἡ ἀπιστία αὐτῶν τὴν πίστιν τοῦ Θεοῦ καταργήσει;

3:4God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, “That You might be justified in Your sayings, and might overcome when You are judged.”

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 51:6 (KJV 51:4).

3:5But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who takes vengeance? (I speak as a man)

3:6God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?

μὴ γένοιτο· ἐπεὶ πῶς κρινεῖ ὁ Θεὸς τὸν κόσμον;

3:7For if the truth of God has more abounded through my lie unto His glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

εἰ γὰρ ἡ ἀλήθεια τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν τῷ ἐμῷ ψεύσματι ἐπερίσσευσεν εἰς τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ, τί ἔτι κἀγὼ ὡς ἁμαρτωλὸς κρίνομαι;

3:8And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) “Let us do evil, that good may come”? whose damnation is just.

None is righteous

3:9What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;

3:10As it is written, “There is none righteous, no, not one:

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 14:1.

3:11There is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God.

יאאין משכיל, אין דורש את אלוהים;

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 14:2.

3:12They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that does good, no, not one.

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 14:3.

3:13Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:

3:14Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 10:7.

3:15Their feet are swift to shed blood:

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 59:7.

3:16Destruction and misery are in their ways:

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 59:7.

3:17And the way of peace have they not known:

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 59:8.

3:18There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

Tenakh. Quotes Psalm 36:2 (KJV 36:1).

3:19Now we know that what things soever the Torah says, it says to them who are under the Torah: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

3:20Therefore by the deeds of the Torah there shall no flesh be justified in His sight: for by the Torah is the knowledge of sin.

Righteousness through faith

3:21But now the righteousness of God without the Torah is manifested, being witnessed by the Torah and the prophets;

3:22Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

3:23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

3:24Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Messiah Yeshua:

3:25Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

3:26To declare, I say, at this time His righteousness: that He might be just, and the justifier of him which believes in Yeshua.

3:27Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

3:28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the Torah.

3:29Is He the God of the Jews only? is He not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:

3:30Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

3:31Do we then make void the Torah through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the Torah.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
