Text (469) 608-9944Psalm 5
David’s prayer to Hashem in the morning: God has no pleasure in wickedness, so he asks to be led in His righteousness, that the deceitful fall and those who trust in Him rejoice.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).
5:1To the chief Musician upon Nechilot, A Psalm of David.
5:2Give ear to my words, O Hashem, consider my meditation.
5:3Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto You will I pray.
5:4My voice shall You hear in the morning, O Hashem; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto You, and will look up.
5:5For You are not a God that has pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with You.
5:6The foolish shall not stand in Your sight: You hate all workers of iniquity.
5:7You shall destroy them that speak leasing: Hashem will abhor the bloody and deceitful man.
5:8But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy: and in Your fear will I worship toward Your holy temple.
5:9Lead me, O Hashem, in Your righteousness because of my enemies; make Your way straight before my face.
5:10For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
5:11Destroy You them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels; cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions; for they have rebelled against You.
5:12But let all those that put their trust in You rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them: let them also that love Your name be joyful in You.
5:13For You, Hashem, will bless the righteous; with favour will You compass him as with a shield.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
