Text (469) 608-9944Psalm 140
A psalm of David asking Hashem to deliver him from evil and violent men who set snares for him, and trusting that Hashem will maintain the cause of the afflicted and the poor.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).
140:1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.
140:2Deliver me, O Hashem, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;
140:3Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.
140:4They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.
140:5Keep me, O Hashem, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings.
140:6The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah.
140:7I said unto Hashem, “You are my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O Hashem.”
140:8O Hashem the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle.
140:9Grant not, O Hashem, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; lest they exalt themselves. Selah.
140:10As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.
140:11Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not up again.
140:12Let not an evil speaker be established in the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.
140:13I know that Hashem will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and the right of the poor.
140:14Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto Your name: the upright shall dwell in Your presence.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
