Text (469) 608-9944Psalm 36
David’s psalm, headed “the servant of Hashem,” contrasting the wicked man who has no fear of God with Hashem’s lovingkindness, faithfulness, and righteousness, and asking that the proud not prevail.
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible, where the heading is verse 1. In most English Bibles the heading has no number, so each verse here is one higher than there (verse 2 here is verse 1 there).
36:1To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of Hashem.
36:2The transgression of the wicked says within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.
36:3For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity be found to be hateful.
36:4The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he has left off to be wise, and to do good.
36:5He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil.
36:6Your mercy, O Hashem, is in the heavens; and Your faithfulness reaches unto the clouds.
36:7Your righteousness is like the great mountains; Your judgments are a great deep: O Hashem, You preserve man and beast.
36:8How excellent is Your lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.
36:9They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Your house; and You shall make them drink of the river of Your pleasures.
36:10For with You is the fountain of life: in Your light shall we see light.
36:11O continue Your lovingkindness unto them that know You; and Your righteousness to the upright in heart.
36:12Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of the wicked remove me.
36:13There are the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast down, and shall not be able to rise.

Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. The Divine Name is printed as it appears in the codex.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Tziyon (Zion)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem,” the short form יָהּ is “Yah,” and הַלְלוּ־יָהּ is “Hallelujah”; “God” (Elohim) and “Lord” (Adonai) are unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In the Hebrew a psalm’s heading (“A Psalm of David…”) is part of the text and is counted as verse 1, or verses 1–2, so in psalms with a heading the verse numbers are often one or two higher than in English Bibles. Where that happens, a note under the summary says so.
