Isaiah, Chapter 40

Hashem comforts His people, and a voice calls to prepare His way in the wilderness; all flesh is grass, but the word of God stands for ever; the Lord Hashem comes as a shepherd; none can be compared to the Creator, who gives strength to them that wait upon Him.

40:1Comfort you, comfort you My people, says your God.

40:2Speak you comfortably to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she has received of Hashem’s hand double for all her sins.

Prepare the way of Hashem

40:3The voice of him that cries in the wilderness, “Prepare you the way of Hashem, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

40:4Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:

40:5And the glory of Hashem shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of Hashem has spoken it.”

The word of our God stands

40:6The voice said, “Cry.” And he said, “What shall I cry?” All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:

40:7The grass withers, the flower fades: because the spirit of Hashem blows upon it: surely the people is grass.

40:8The grass withers, the flower fades: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

Behold your God

40:9O Tziyon (Zion), that bring good tidings, get you up into the high mountain; O Yerushalayim, that bring good tidings, lift up your voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Yehudah (Judah), “Behold your God!”

40:10Behold, the Lord Hashem will come with strong hand, and His arm shall rule for Him: behold, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him.

40:11He shall feed His flock like a shepherd: He shall gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

The Creator beyond compare

40:12Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

40:13Who has directed the Spirit of Hashem, or being His counsellor has taught Him?

40:14With whom took He counsel, and who instructed Him, and taught Him in the path of judgment, and taught Him knowledge, and showed to Him the way of understanding?

40:15Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, He takes up the isles as a very little thing.

40:16And Levanon (Lebanon) is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.

40:17All nations before Him are as nothing; and they are counted to Him less than nothing, and vanity.

40:18To whom then will you liken God? or what likeness will you compare unto Him?

40:19The workman melts a graven image, and the goldsmith spreads it over with gold, and casts silver chains.

40:20He that is so impoverished that he has no oblation chooses a tree that will not rot; he seeks unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved.

40:21Have you not known? have you not heard? has it not been told you from the beginning? have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?

40:22It is He that sits upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in:

40:23That brings the princes to nothing; He makes the judges of the earth as vanity.

40:24Yea, they shall not be planted; yea, they shall not be sown: yea, their stock shall not take root in the earth: and He shall also blow upon them, and they shall wither, and the whirlwind shall take them away as stubble.

40:25To whom then will you liken Me, or shall I be equal? says the Holy One.

40:26Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who has created these things, that brings out their host by number: He calls them all by names by the greatness of His might, for that He is strong in power; not one fails.

Strength for the weary

40:27Why say you, O Ya’akov (Jacob), and speak, O Israel, “My way is hid from Hashem, and my judgment is passed over from my God”?

40:28Have you not known? have you not heard, that the everlasting God, Hashem, the Creator of the ends of the earth, faints not, neither is weary? there is no searching of His understanding.

40:29He gives power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increases strength.

40:30Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

40:31But they that wait upon Hashem shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
