John, Chapter 8

The scribes and Pharisees bring Yeshua a woman taken in adultery, and He sends her accusers away one by one. In the temple He declares that He is the light of the world, speaks of the Father who sent Him, and tells those who claim Avraham as their father that before Avraham was, He is.

8:1Yeshua (Jesus) went unto the mount of Olives.

8:2And early in the morning He came again into the temple, and all the people came unto Him; and He sat down, and taught them.

The woman taken in adultery

8:3And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto Him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

8:4They say unto Him, “Rabbi, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.

8:5Now Moshe (Moses) in the Torah commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what say You?”

ἐν δὲ τῷ νόμῳ Μωσῆς ἡμῖν ἐνετείλατο τὰς τοιαύτας λιθοβολεῖσθαι· σὺ οὖν τί λέγεις;

8:6This they said, tempting Him, that they might have to accuse Him. But Yeshua stooped down, and with His finger wrote on the ground, as though He heard them not.

8:7So when they continued asking Him, He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.”

8:8And again He stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

8:9And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Yeshua was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

8:10When Yeshua had lifted up Himself, and saw none but the woman, He said unto her, “Woman, where are those your accusers? has no man condemned you?”

ἀνακύψας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ μηδένα θεασάμενος πλὴν τὴς γυναικός, εἶπεν αὐτῇ, Ἡ γυνή, ποῦ εἰσιν ἐκεῖνοι οἱ κατήγοροί σου; οὐδείς σε κατέκρινεν;

8:11She said, “No man, Master.” And Yeshua said unto her, “Neither do I condemn you: go, and sin no more.”

The light of the world

8:12Then spoke Yeshua again unto them, saying, “I am the light of the world: he that follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”

8:13The Pharisees therefore said unto Him, “You bear record of Yourself; Your record is not true.”

8:14Yeshua answered and said unto them, “Though I bear record of Myself, yet My record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but you cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.

8:15You judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

8:16And yet if I judge, My judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent Me.

8:17It is also written in your Torah, that the testimony of two men is true.

Tenakh. Quotes Deuteronomy 19:15.

8:18I am one that bear witness of Myself, and the Father that sent Me bears witness of Me.”

8:19Then said they unto Him, “Where is Your Father?” Yeshua answered, “You neither know Me, nor My Father: if you had known Me, you should have known My Father also.”

8:20These words spoke Yeshua in the treasury, as He taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on Him; for His hour was not yet come.

Whither I go, you cannot come

8:21Then said Yeshua again unto them, “I go My way, and you shall seek Me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, you cannot come.”

8:22Then said the Jews, “Will He kill Himself? because He says, ‘Whither I go, you cannot come.’”

ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, Μήτι ἀποκτενεῖ ἑαυτόν, ὅτι λέγει, Ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω, ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν;

8:23And He said unto them, “You are from beneath; I am from above: you are of this world; I am not of this world.

8:24I said therefore unto you, that you shall die in your sins: for if you believe not that I am He, you shall die in your sins.”

8:25Then said they unto Him, “Who are You?” And Yeshua says unto them, “Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.

8:26I have many things to say and to judge of you: but He that sent Me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of Him.”

8:27They understood not that He spoke to them of the Father.

8:28Then said Yeshua unto them, “When you have lifted up the Son of man, then shall you know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father has taught Me, I speak these things.

8:29And He that sent Me is with Me: the Father has not left Me alone; for I do always those things that please Him.”

8:30As He spoke these words, many believed on Him.

The truth shall make you free

8:31Then said Yeshua to those Jews which believed on Him, “If you continue in My word, then are you My disciples indeed;

8:32And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

8:33They answered Him, “We be Avraham’s (Abraham’s) seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how say You, ‘You shall be made free’?”

ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ, Σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐσμεν, καὶ οὐδενὶ δεδουλεύκαμεν πώποτε· πῶς σὺ λέγεις ὅτι Ἐλεύθεροι γενήσεσθε;

8:34Yeshua answered them, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, Whosoever commits sin is the servant of sin.

8:35And the servant abides not in the house for ever: but the Son abides ever.

8:36If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

8:37I know that you are Avraham’s seed; but you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.

8:38I speak that which I have seen with My Father: and you do that which you have seen with your father.”

8:39They answered and said unto Him, “Avraham is our father.” Yeshua says unto them, “If you were Avraham’s children, you would do the works of Avraham.

8:40But now you seek to kill Me, a man that has told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Avraham.

8:41You do the deeds of your father.” Then said they to Him, “We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.”

8:42Yeshua said unto them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of Myself, but He sent Me.

8:43Why do you not understand My speech? even because you cannot hear My word.

8:44You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

8:45And because I tell you the truth, you believe Me not.

8:46Which of you convinces Me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do you not believe Me?

τίς ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐλέγχει με περὶ ἁμαρτίας; εἰ δὲ ἀλήθειαν λέγω, διατί ὑμεῖς οὐ πιστεύετέ μοι;

8:47He that is of God hears God’s words: you therefore hear them not, because you are not of God.”

Before Avraham was

8:48Then answered the Jews, and said unto Him, “Say we not well that You are a Samaritan, and have a demon?”

ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, Οὐ καλῶς λέγομεν ἡμεῖς ὅτι Σαμαρείτης εἶ σύ, καὶ δαιμόνιον ἔχεις;

8:49Yeshua answered, “I have not a demon; but I honour My Father, and you do dishonour Me.

8:50And I seek not My own glory: there is One that seeks and judges.

8:51Truly, truly, I say unto you, If a man keep My saying, he shall never see death.”

8:52Then said the Jews unto Him, “Now we know that You have a demon. Avraham is dead, and the prophets; and You say, ‘If a man keep My saying, he shall never taste of death.’

8:53Are You greater than our father Avraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom make You Yourself?”

μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἀβραάμ, ὅστις ἀπέθανε; καὶ οἱ προφῆται ἀπέθανον· τίνα σεαυτὸν σὺ ποιεῖς;

8:54Yeshua answered, “If I honour Myself, My honour is nothing: it is My Father that honours Me; of whom you say, that He is your God:

8:55Yet you have not known Him; but I know Him: and if I should say, ‘I know Him not,’ I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know Him, and keep His saying.

8:56Your father Avraham rejoiced to see My day: and he saw it, and was glad.”

8:57Then said the Jews unto Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Avraham?”

εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς αὐτόν, Πεντήκοντα ἔτη οὔπω ἔχεις, καὶ Ἀβραὰμ ἑώρακας;

8:58Yeshua said unto them, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, Before Avraham was, I am.”

8:59Then took they up stones to cast at Him: but Yeshua hid Himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”

Quotations
A note under a verse links each quotation from the Tenakh to our Tenakh chapter page. Those pages follow the Hebrew Bible’s verse numbers; where they differ from the King James numbers, both are given.
