John, Chapter 9
Yeshua heals a man blind from his birth, anointing his eyes with clay and sending him to wash in the pool of Shiloaḥ. The Pharisees question the man and his parents and cast him out, and Yeshua makes Himself known to him as the Son of God.
9:1And as Yeshua (Jesus) passed by, He saw a man which was blind from his birth.
9:2And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?”
καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες, Ῥαββί, τίς ἥμαρτεν, οὗτος ἢ οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ;
9:3Yeshua answered, “Neither has this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
9:4I must work the works of Him that sent Me, while it is day: the night comes, when no man can work.
9:5As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
9:6When He had thus spoken, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
9:7And said unto him, “Go, wash in the pool of Shiloaḥ (Siloam),” (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.
9:8The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, “Is not this he that sat and begged?”
οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον ὅτι τυφλὸς ἦν, ἔλεγον, Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν;
9:9Some said, “This is he:” others said, “He is like him:” but he said, “I am he.”
9:10Therefore said they unto him, “How were your eyes opened?”
ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ, Πῶς ἀνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί;
9:11He answered and said, “A man that is called Yeshua made clay, and anointed my eyes, and said unto me, ‘Go to the pool of Shiloaḥ, and wash:’ and I went and washed, and I received sight.”
9:12Then said they unto him, “Where is He?” He said, “I know not.”
9:13They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.
9:14And it was the sabbath day when Yeshua made the clay, and opened his eyes.
9:15Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, “He put clay upon my eyes, and I washed, and do see.”
9:16Therefore said some of the Pharisees, “This man is not of God, because He keeps not the sabbath day.” Others said, “How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles?” And there was a division among them.
9:17They say unto the blind man again, “What say you of Him, that He has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”
9:18But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
9:19And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? how then does he now see?”
καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς ὑμῶν, ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη; πῶς οὖν ἄρτι βλέπει;
9:20His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:
9:21But by what means he now sees, we know not; or who has opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.”
9:22These words spoke his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that He was Messiah, he should be put out of the synagogue.
9:23Therefore said his parents, “He is of age; ask him.”
9:24Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, “Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.”
9:25He answered and said, “Whether He be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.”
9:26Then said they to him again, “What did He to you? how opened He your eyes?”
εἶπον δὲ αὐτῷ πάλιν, Τί ἐποίησέ σοι; πῶς ἤνοιξέ σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
9:27He answered them, “I have told you already, and you did not hear: wherefore would you hear it again? will you also be His disciples?”
ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς, Εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη, καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε, τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν; μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι;
9:28Then they reviled him, and said, “You are His disciple; but we are Moshe’s (Moses’) disciples.
9:29We know that God spoke unto Moshe: as for this fellow, we know not from whence He is.”
9:30The man answered and said unto them, “Why herein is a marvellous thing, that you know not from whence He is, and yet He has opened my eyes.
9:31Now we know that God hears not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and does His will, him He hears.
9:32Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.
9:33If this man were not of God, He could do nothing.”
9:34They answered and said unto him, “You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us?” And they cast him out.
9:35Yeshua heard that they had cast him out; and when He had found him, He said unto him, “Do you believe on the Son of God?”
Ἤκουσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω· καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτόν, εἶπεν, αὐτῷ Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ;
9:36He answered and said, “Who is He, Master, that I might believe on Him?”
ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπε, Τίς ἐστι, Κύριε, ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν;
9:37And Yeshua said unto him, “You have both seen Him, and it is He that talks with you.”
9:38And he said, “Master, I believe.” And he worshipped Him.
9:39And Yeshua said, “For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.”
9:40And some of the Pharisees which were with Him heard these words, and said unto Him, “Are we blind also?”
καὶ ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα οἱ ὄντες μετ’ αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, Μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν;
9:41Yeshua said unto them, “If you were blind, you should have no sin: but now you say, ‘We see;’ therefore your sin remains.

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
