Text (469) 608-9944Deuteronomy, Chapter 19
Three cities of refuge are set apart for one who kills his neighbor unawares, with three more if the border is enlarged, while a deliberate murderer is handed to the avenger of blood; laws on the neighbor’s landmark, two or three witnesses, and the punishment of a false witness.
19:1When Hashem your God has cut off the nations whose land Hashem your God gives you, and you succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses,
19:2you shall separate three cities for you in the midst of your land, which Hashem your God gives you to possess it.
19:3You shall prepare for yourself the way, and divide the borders of your land, which Hashem your God gives you to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee there.
19:4And this is the case of the slayer, who shall flee there, that he may live: whoever kills his neighbor unawares, whom he did not hate in time past;
19:5as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to hew wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle, and strikes his neighbor, so that he dies; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live;
19:6lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he did not hate him in time past.
19:7Therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall separate three cities for you.’
19:8And if Hashem your God enlarge your border, as He has sworn unto your fathers, and give you all the land which He promised to give unto your fathers;
19:9if you shall keep all these commandments to do them, which I command you this day, to love Hashem your God, and to walk ever in His ways; then you shall add three cities more for you, besides these three;
19:10that innocent blood be not shed in your land, which Hashem your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be upon you.
19:11But if any man hate his neighbor, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and strike him mortally so that he dies, and flees into one of these cities,
19:12then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him from there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
19:13Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the guilt of innocent blood from Yisrael (Israel), that it may go well with you.
19:14You shall not remove your neighbor’s landmark, which they of old time have set in your inheritance, which you shall inherit in the land that Hashem your God gives you to possess it.
19:15One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sins; at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.
19:16If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong,
19:17then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Hashem, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days;
19:18and the judges shall make diligent inquiry; and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother,
19:19then you shall do unto him as he had thought to have done unto his brother; so shall you put away the evil from among you.
19:20And those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall from now on commit no more any such evil among you.
19:21And your eye shall not pity: life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Deuteronomy they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 5, 12, 13, 22, 23, 28 and 29; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
