John, Chapter 7

Yeshua’s brothers urge Him to show Himself at the feast of tabernacles, and He goes up in secret. He teaches in the temple, the people are divided over whether He is the Messiah, and on the last day He offers living water. Nicodemus questions the rulers who want Him seized.

7:1After these things Yeshua (Jesus) walked in Galil (Galilee): for He would not walk in Yehudah (Jewry), because the Jews sought to kill Him.

7:2Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand.

7:3His brethren therefore said unto Him, “Depart hence, and go into Yehudah, that Your disciples also may see the works that You do.

7:4For there is no man that does any thing in secret, and he himself seeks to be known openly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”

7:5For neither did His brethren believe in Him.

7:6Then Yeshua said unto them, “My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.

7:7The world cannot hate you; but Me it hates, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

7:8Go you up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for My time is not yet full come.”

7:9When He had said these words unto them, He abode still in Galil.

Yeshua goes up to the feast

7:10But when His brethren were gone up, then went He also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

7:11Then the Jews sought Him at the feast, and said, “Where is He?”

οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ, καὶ ἔλεγον, Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος;

7:12And there was much murmuring among the people concerning Him: for some said, “He is a good man:” others said, “Nay; but He deceives the people.”

7:13Howbeit no man spoke openly of Him for fear of the Jews.

Teaching in the temple

7:14Now about the midst of the feast Yeshua went up into the temple, and taught.

7:15And the Jews marvelled, saying, “How knows this man letters, having never learned?”

καὶ ἐθαύμαζον οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες, Πῶς οὗτος γράμματα οἶδε, μὴ μεμαθηκώς;

7:16Yeshua answered them, and said, “My doctrine is not Mine, but His that sent Me.

7:17If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of Myself.

7:18He that speaks of himself seeks his own glory: but he that seeks His glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

7:19Did not Moshe (Moses) give you the Torah, and yet none of you keeps the Torah? Why go you about to kill Me?”

οὐ Μωσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὸν νόμον, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ποιεῖ τὸν νόμον; τί με ζητεῖτε ἀποκτεῖναι;

7:20The people answered and said, “You have a demon: who goes about to kill You?”

ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ὄχλος καὶ εἶπε, Δαιμόνιον ἔχεις· τίς σε ζητεῖ ἀποκτεῖναι;

7:21Yeshua answered and said unto them, “I have done one work, and you all marvel.

7:22Moshe therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moshe, but of the fathers;) and you on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

7:23If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the Torah of Moshe should not be broken; are you angry at Me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

εἰ περιτομὴν λαμβάνει ἄνθρωπος ἐν σαββάτῳ, ἵνα μὴ λυθῇ ὁ νόμος Μωσέως, ἐμοὶ χολᾶτε ὅτι ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐποίησα ἐν σαββάτῳ;

7:24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.”

Is this the Messiah?

7:25Then said some of them of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), “Is not this He, whom they seek to kill?

Ἔλεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν, Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι;

7:26But, lo, He speaks boldly, and they say nothing unto Him. Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Messiah?

καὶ ἴδε παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ, καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσι μήποτε ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ Χριστός;

7:27Howbeit we know this man whence He is: but when Messiah comes, no man knows whence He is.”

7:28Then cried Yeshua in the temple as He taught, saying, “You both know Me, and you know whence I am: and I am not come of Myself, but He that sent Me is true, whom you know not.

7:29But I know Him: for I am from Him, and He has sent Me.”

7:30Then they sought to take Him: but no man laid hands on Him, because His hour was not yet come.

7:31And many of the people believed on Him, and said, “When Messiah comes, will He do more miracles than these which this man has done?”

πολλοὶ δὲ ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν, καὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι Ὁ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ, μήτι πλείονα σημεῖα τούτων ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ἐποίησεν;

7:32The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning Him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him.

7:33Then said Yeshua unto them, “Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto Him that sent Me.

7:34You shall seek Me, and shall not find Me: and where I am, thither you cannot come.”

7:35Then said the Jews among themselves, “Whither will He go, that we shall not find Him? will He go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and teach the Gentiles?

εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς, Ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν; μὴ εἰς τὴν διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι, καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας;

7:36What manner of saying is this that He said, ‘You shall seek Me, and shall not find Me: and where I am, thither you cannot come’?”

τίς ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ λόγος ὃν εἶπε, Ζητήσετέ με, καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ· καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ, ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν;

Rivers of living water

7:37In the last day, that great day of the feast, Yeshua stood and cried, saying, “If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink.

7:38He that believes on Me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”

7:39(But this spoke He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy Spirit was not yet given; because that Yeshua was not yet glorified.)

7:40Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, “Of a truth this is the Prophet.”

7:41Others said, “This is the Messiah.” But some said, “Shall Messiah come out of Galil?

ἄλλοι ἔλεγον, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον, Μὴ γὰρ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται;

7:42Has not the scripture said, That Messiah comes of the seed of David, and out of the town of Beit Leḥem (Bethlehem), where David was?”

οὐχὶ ἡ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαβίδ, καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλεέμ, τῆς κώμης ὅπου ἦν Δαβίδ, ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται;

7:43So there was a division among the people because of Him.

7:44And some of them would have taken Him; but no man laid hands on Him.

The rulers will not believe

7:45Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, “Why have you not brought Him?”

Ἦλθον οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους· καὶ εἶπον αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι, Διατί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν;

7:46The officers answered, “Never man spoke like this man.”

7:47Then answered them the Pharisees, “Are you also deceived?

ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε;

7:48Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on Him?

μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτόν, ἢ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων;

7:49But this people who knows not the Torah are cursed.”

7:50Nicodemus says unto them, (he that came to Yeshua by night, being one of them,)

7:51“Does our Torah judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he does?”

Μὴ ὁ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνει τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ παρ’ αὐτοῦ πρότερον καὶ γνῷ τί ποιεῖ;

7:52They answered and said unto him, “Are you also of Galil? Search, and look: for out of Galil arises no prophet.”

7:53And every man went unto his own house.

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
