John, Chapter 6
Yeshua feeds five thousand men with five barley loaves and two small fishes, and that night He walks on the sea to His disciples. In the synagogue at Kefar Naḥum He teaches that He is the bread of life come down from heaven; many disciples turn back, but Shim’on Peter confesses Him as the Messiah.
6:1After these things Yeshua (Jesus) went over the sea of Galil (Galilee), which is the sea of Tiberias.
6:2And a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His miracles which He did on them that were diseased.
6:3And Yeshua went up into a mountain, and there He sat with His disciples.
6:4And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.
6:5When Yeshua then lifted up His eyes, and saw a great company come unto Him, He says unto Philip, “Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?”
ἐπάρας οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς, καὶ θεασάμενος ὅτι πολὺς ὄχλος ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτόν, λέγει πρὸς τὸν Φίλιππον, Πόθεν ἀγοράσομεν ἄρτους, ἵνα φάγωσιν οὗτοι;
6:6And this He said to prove him: for He Himself knew what He would do.
6:7Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little.”
6:8One of His disciples, Andrew, Shim’on (Simon) Peter’s brother, says unto Him,
6:9“There is a lad here, which has five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?”
Ἔστι παιδάριον ἓν ὧδε, ὃ ἔχει πέντε ἄρτους κριθίνους καὶ δύο ὀψάρια· ἀλλὰ ταῦτα τί ἐστιν εἰς τοσούτους;
6:10And Yeshua said, “Make the men sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
6:11And Yeshua took the loaves; and when He had given thanks, He distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
6:12When they were filled, He said unto His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.”
6:13Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.
6:14Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Yeshua did, said, “This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.”
6:15When Yeshua therefore perceived that they would come and take Him by force, to make Him a king, He departed again into a mountain Himself alone.
6:16And when even was now come, His disciples went down unto the sea,
6:17And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Kefar Naḥum (Capernaum). And it was now dark, and Yeshua was not come to them.
6:18And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew.
6:19So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Yeshua walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid.
6:20But He says unto them, “It is I; be not afraid.”
6:21Then they willingly received Him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.
6:22The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto His disciples were entered, and that Yeshua went not with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples were gone away alone;
6:23(Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Master had given thanks:)
6:24When the people therefore saw that Yeshua was not there, neither His disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Kefar Naḥum, seeking for Yeshua.
6:25And when they had found Him on the other side of the sea, they said unto Him, “Rabbi, when came You hither?”
καὶ εὑρόντες αὐτὸν πέραν τῆς θαλάσσης, εἶπον αὐτῷ, Ῥαββί, πότε ὧδε γέγονας;
6:26Yeshua answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, You seek Me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
6:27Labour not for the food which perishes, but for that food which endures unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for Him has God the Father sealed.”
6:28Then said they unto Him, “What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?”
εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτόν, Τί ποιῶμεν, ἵνα ἐργαζώμεθα τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ;
6:29Yeshua answered and said unto them, “This is the work of God, that you believe on Him whom He has sent.”
6:30They said therefore unto Him, “What sign show You then, that we may see, and believe You? what do You work?
εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ, Τί οὖν ποιεῖς σὺ σημεῖον, ἵνα ἴδωμεν καὶ πιστεύσωμέν σοι; τί ἐργάζῃ;
6:31Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
6:32Then Yeshua said unto them, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, Moshe (Moses) gave you not that bread from heaven; but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
6:33For the bread of God is He which comes down from heaven, and gives life unto the world.”
6:34Then said they unto Him, “Master, evermore give us this bread.”
6:35And Yeshua said unto them, “I am the bread of life: he that comes to Me shall never hunger; and he that believes on Me shall never thirst.
6:36But I said unto you, That you also have seen Me, and believe not.
6:37All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me; and him that comes to Me I will in no wise cast out.
6:38For I came down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him that sent Me.
6:39And this is the Father’s will which has sent Me, that of all which He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
6:40And this is the will of Him that sent Me, that every one which sees the Son, and believes on Him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”
6:41The Jews then murmured at Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.”
6:42And they said, “Is not this Yeshua, the son of Yosef (Joseph), whose father and mother we know? how is it then that He says, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
καὶ ἔλεγον, Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰησοῦς ὁ υἱὸς Ἰωσήφ, οὗ ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα; πῶς οὖν λέγει οὖτος ὅτι Ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβέβηκα;
6:43Yeshua therefore answered and said unto them, “Murmur not among yourselves.
6:44No man can come to Me, except the Father which has sent Me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
6:45It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall be all taught of God.’ Every man therefore that has heard, and has learned of the Father, comes unto Me.
6:46Not that any man has seen the Father, save He which is of God, He has seen the Father.
6:47Truly, truly, I say unto you, He that believes on Me has everlasting life.
6:48I am that bread of life.
6:49Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.
6:50This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
6:51I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is My flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
6:52The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”
Ἐμάχοντο οὖν πρὸς ἀλλήλους οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι λέγοντες, Πῶς δύναται οὗτος ἡμῖν δοῦναι τὴν σάρκα φαγεῖν;
6:53Then Yeshua said unto them, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink His blood, you have no life in you.
6:54Whoso eats My flesh, and drinks My blood, has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
6:55For My flesh is food indeed, and My blood is drink indeed.
6:56He that eats My flesh, and drinks My blood, dwells in Me, and I in him.
6:57As the living Father has sent Me, and I live by the Father: so he that eats Me, even he shall live by Me.
6:58This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eats of this bread shall live for ever.”
6:59These things said He in the synagogue, as He taught in Kefar Naḥum.
6:60Many therefore of His disciples, when they had heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can hear it?”
Πολλοὶ οὖν ἀκούσαντες ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ εἶπον, Σκληρός ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ λόγος· τίς δύναται αὐτοῦ ἀκούειν;
6:61When Yeshua knew in Himself that His disciples murmured at it, He said unto them, “Does this offend you?
εἰδὼς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐν ἑαυτῷ ὅτι γογγύζουσι περὶ τούτου οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Τοῦτο ὑμᾶς σκανδαλίζει;
6:62What and if you shall see the Son of man ascend up where He was before?
6:63It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
6:64But there are some of you that believe not.” For Yeshua knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray Him.
6:65And He said, “Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto Me, except it were given unto him of My Father.”
6:66From that time many of His disciples went back, and walked no more with Him.
6:67Then said Yeshua unto the twelve, “Will you also go away?”
εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς δώδεκα, Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε ὑπάγειν;
6:68Then Shim’on Peter answered Him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
6:69And we believe and are sure that You are that Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
6:70Yeshua answered them, “Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil?”
ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Οὐκ ἐγὼ ὑμᾶς τοὺς δώδεκα ἐξελεξάμην, καὶ ἐξ ὑμῶν εἷς διάβολός ἐστιν;
6:71He spoke of Yehudah Ish-Keriyot (Judas Iscariot) the son of Shim’on: for he it was that should betray Him, being one of the twelve.

Sources & method
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
- Greek text
- The Textus Receptus as edited by F. H. A. Scrivener (1894), the Greek text that underlies the King James Version (public domain).
- Hebrew text
- The Open Hebrew Living New Testament, a modern Hebrew translation, copyright © 1979, 2009 by Biblica, Inc., used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 licence. The original work by Biblica, Inc. is available for free at www.biblica.com and open.bible. Changes: shown verse by verse beside the English and Greek, without its section headings and footnotes; where it joins verses, the later verse points to the joined one; 3 John 15 is shown with verse 14. Our arrangement of this Hebrew text is shared under the same licence. Where the Greek has Kyrios for God, this translation writes ה׳ (Hashem), not the sacred name.
- Quotations
- A note under a verse links each quotation from the Tenakh to our Tenakh chapter page. Those pages follow the Hebrew Bible’s verse numbers; where they differ from the King James numbers, both are given.
