John, Chapter 5

At the pool of Beit Ḥasda in Yerushalayim, Yeshua heals a man who had been sick thirty-eight years, and the Jews seek to kill Him for doing this on the sabbath and for calling God His Father. Yeshua speaks of the authority of the Son and of the witness borne to Him by Yoḥanan, His works, the Father, the scriptures and Moshe.

5:1After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Yeshua (Jesus) went up to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).

The healing at Beit Ḥasda

5:2Now there is at Yerushalayim by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Beit Ḥasda (Bethesda), having five porches.

5:3In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.

5:4For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.

5:5And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

5:6When Yeshua saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, He says unto him, “Will you be made whole?”

τοῦτον ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς κατακείμενον, καὶ γνοὺς ὅτι πολὺν ἤδη χρόνον ἔχει, λέγει αὐτῷ, Θέλεις ὑγιὴς γενέσθαι;

5:7The impotent man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”

5:8Yeshua says unto him, “Rise, take up your bed, and walk.”

5:9And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

5:10The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, “It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”

5:11He answered them, “He that made me whole, the same said unto me, ‘Take up your bed, and walk.’”

5:12Then asked they him, “What man is that which said unto you, ‘Take up your bed, and walk’?”

ἠρώτησαν οὖν αὐτόν, Τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ εἰπών σοι, Ἆρον τὸν κράββατόν σου καὶ περιπάτει;

5:13And he that was healed knew not who it was: for Yeshua had conveyed Himself away, a multitude being in that place.

5:14Afterward Yeshua finds him in the temple, and said unto him, “Behold, you are made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto you.”

5:15The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Yeshua, which had made him whole.

5:16And therefore did the Jews persecute Yeshua, and sought to slay Him, because He had done these things on the sabbath day.

5:17But Yeshua answered them, “My Father works hitherto, and I work.”

5:18Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill Him, because He not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.

The authority of the Son

5:19Then answered Yeshua and said unto them, “Truly, truly, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do: for what things soever He does, these also does the Son likewise.

5:20For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that Himself does: and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.

5:21For as the Father raises up the dead, and quickens them; even so the Son quickens whom He will.

5:22For the Father judges no man, but has committed all judgment unto the Son:

5:23That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honours not the Son honours not the Father which has sent Him.

5:24Truly, truly, I say unto you, He that hears My word, and believes on Him that sent Me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

5:25Truly, truly, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

5:26For as the Father has life in Himself; so has He given to the Son to have life in Himself;

5:27And has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man.

5:28Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear His voice,

5:29And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

5:30I can of My own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and My judgment is just; because I seek not My own will, but the will of the Father which has sent Me.

Witnesses to the Son

5:31If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true.

5:32There is another that bears witness of Me; and I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true.

5:33You sent unto Yoḥanan (John), and he bore witness unto the truth.

5:34But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that you might be saved.

5:35He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

5:36But I have greater witness than that of Yoḥanan: for the works which the Father has given Me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me.

5:37And the Father Himself, which has sent Me, has borne witness of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His shape.

5:38And you have not His word abiding in you: for whom He has sent, Him you believe not.

5:39Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me.

5:40And you will not come to Me, that you might have life.

5:41I receive not honour from men.

5:42But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you.

5:43I am come in My Father’s name, and you receive Me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.

5:44How can you believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that comes from God only?

πῶς δύνασθε ὑμεῖς πιστεῦσαι, δόξαν παρὰ ἀλλήλων λαμβάνοντες, καὶ τὴν δόξαν τὴν παρὰ τοῦ μόνου Θεοῦ οὐ ζητεῖτε;

5:45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuses you, even Moshe (Moses), in whom you trust.

5:46For had you believed Moshe, you would have believed Me: for he wrote of Me.

5:47But if you believe not his writings, how shall you believe My words?”

εἰ δὲ τοῖς ἐκείνου γράμμασιν οὐ πιστεύετε, πῶς τοῖς ἐμοῖς ῥήμασι πιστεύσετε;

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
