Isaiah, Chapter 54

The barren one is told to sing and enlarge the place of her tent, for her Maker is her husband; Hashem, who forsook her for a small moment, gathers her with everlasting kindness, swears as in the waters of Noach, builds her with precious stones, and promises that no weapon formed against her shall prosper.

54:1Sing, O barren, you that did not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, you that did not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, says Hashem.

54:2Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of your habitations: spare not, lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes;

54:3For you shall break forth on the right hand and on the left; and your seed shall inherit the Gentiles, and make the desolate cities to be inhabited.

Your Maker is your husband

54:4Fear not; for you shall not be ashamed: neither be you confounded; for you shall not be put to shame: for you shall forget the shame of your youth, and shall not remember the reproach of your widowhood any more.

54:5For your Maker is your husband; Hashem of hosts is His name; and your Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall He be called.

54:6For Hashem has called you as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when you were refused, says your God.

54:7For a small moment have I forsaken you; but with great mercies will I gather you.

54:8In a little wrath I hid My face from you for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on you, says Hashem your Redeemer.

As the waters of Noach

54:9For this is as the waters of Noach (Noah) unto Me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noach should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with you, nor rebuke you.

54:10For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, says Hashem that has mercy on you.

Foundations of sapphires

54:11O you afflicted, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay your stones with fair colors, and lay your foundations with sapphires.

54:12And I will make your windows of agates, and your gates of carbuncles, and all your borders of pleasant stones.

54:13And all your children shall be taught of Hashem; and great shall be the peace of your children.

No weapon formed against you

54:14In righteousness shall you be established: you shall be far from oppression; for you shall not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near you.

54:15Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by Me: whosoever shall gather together against you shall fall for your sake.

54:16Behold, I have created the smith that blows the coals in the fire, and that brings forth an instrument for his work; and I have created the waster to destroy.

54:17No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against you in judgment you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of Hashem, and their righteousness is of Me, says Hashem.

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
