2 Thessalonians, Chapter 1

Paul, Silvanus and Timothy greet the congregation of the Thessalonians and thank God for their growing faith and love under persecution. Paul tells them that God will give rest to the afflicted and repay their persecutors when the Master Yeshua is revealed from heaven, and prays that they be counted worthy of their calling.

1:1Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy (Timotheus), unto the congregation of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Master Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah:

1:2Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Master Yeshua the Messiah.

Thanksgiving for their faith

1:3We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all toward each other abounds;

1:4So that we ourselves glory in you in the congregations of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure:

1:5Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer:

The Master revealed from heaven

1:6Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

1:7And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Master Yeshua shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,

1:8In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Master Yeshua the Messiah:

1:9Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Master, and from the glory of His power;

Tenakh. Quotes Isaiah 2:10.

1:10When He shall come to be glorified in His saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

Paul’s prayer for them

1:11Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of faith with power:

1:12That the name of our Master Yeshua the Messiah may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Master Yeshua the Messiah.

Sources & method

English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places with Hebrew names carry them, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yeshua (Jesus)); Greek and Roman names keep their English form. Christ is “Messiah”; Lord, used of Yeshua, is “Master”; where the Greek has Kyrios for God, the English keeps “the Lord.” “Church” is “congregation,” “baptize” is “immerse,” and the Holy Ghost is “the Holy Spirit.”
