Isaiah, Chapter 2

The word Yesha’yahu saw concerning Yehudah and Yerushalayim: in the last days all nations flow to the mountain of Hashem’s house and learn war no more, but the house of Ya’akov, full of idols, is warned of the day of Hashem of hosts, when the proud are brought low and Hashem alone is exalted.

2:1The word that Yesha’yahu (Isaiah) the son of Amotz (Amoz) saw concerning Yehudah (Judah) and Yerushalayim (Jerusalem).

The mountain of Hashem’s house

2:2And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of Hashem’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.

2:3And many people shall go and say, “Come you, and let us go up to the mountain of Hashem, to the house of the God of Ya’akov (Jacob); and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths:” for out of Tziyon (Zion) shall go forth the Torah, and the word of Hashem from Yerushalayim.

2:4And He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

2:5O house of Ya’akov, come you, and let us walk in the light of Hashem.

A land full of idols

2:6Therefore You have forsaken Your people the house of Ya’akov, because they are replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Pelishtim (Philistines), and they please themselves in the children of strangers.

2:7Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:

2:8Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:

2:9And the mean man bows down, and the great man humbles himself: therefore forgive them not.

2:10Enter into the rock, and hide you in the dust, for fear of Hashem, and for the glory of His majesty.

2:11The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and Hashem alone shall be exalted in that day.

The day of Hashem of hosts

2:12For the day of Hashem of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

2:13And upon all the cedars of Levanon (Lebanon), that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,

2:14And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,

2:15And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,

2:16And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.

2:17And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and Hashem alone shall be exalted in that day.

2:18And the idols He shall utterly abolish.

2:19And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of Hashem, and for the glory of His majesty, when He arises to shake terribly the earth.

2:20In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

2:21To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of Hashem, and for the glory of His majesty, when He arises to shake terribly the earth.

2:22Cease you from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?

Sources & method

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Isaiah they differ from most English Bibles in chapters 8–9 (9:1 there is 8:23 here) and 63–64 (64:1 there is the end of 63:19 here); a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
