Text (469) 608-9944Numbers, Chapter 21
Yisrael destroys the Kena’ani of Arad at Ḥormah; Hashem sends fiery serpents and Moshe makes the serpent of brass; the people journey toward Moav, sing at the well, and defeat Siḥon king of the Emori and Og king of Bashan.
21:1And when the Kena’ani (Canaanite), the king of Arad, who dwelt in the south, heard that Yisrael (Israel) came by the way of the spies, then he fought against Yisrael, and took some of them captive.
21:2And Yisrael vowed a vow unto Hashem, and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.”
21:3And Hashem listened to the voice of Yisrael, and delivered up the Kena’ani; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities; and he called the name of the place Ḥormah (Hormah).
21:4And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of Yam Suf (the Red sea), to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.
21:5And the people spoke against God, and against Moshe (Moses), “Why have you brought us up out of Mitzrayim (Egypt) to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loathes this light bread.”
21:6And Hashem sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many people of Yisrael died.
21:7Therefore the people came to Moshe, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against Hashem, and against you; pray unto Hashem, that He take away the serpents from us.” And Moshe prayed for the people.
21:8And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looks upon it, shall live.”
21:9And Moshe made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked upon the serpent of brass, he lived.
21:10And the children of Yisrael set forward, and pitched in Ovot (Oboth).
21:11And they journeyed from Ovot, and pitched at Iyei HaAvarim (Ije-abarim), in the wilderness which is before Moav (Moab), toward the sunrise.
21:12From there they moved on, and pitched in the valley of Zared.
21:13From there they moved on, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that comes out of the border of the Emori (Amorites); for Arnon is the border of Moav, between Moav and the Emori.
21:14Therefore it is said in the book of the wars of Hashem, “What He did in Yam Suf, and in the brooks of Arnon,
21:15and at the stream of the brooks that goes down to the dwelling of Ar, and lies upon the border of Moav.”
21:16And from there they went to Be’er (Beer); that is the well of which Hashem spoke unto Moshe, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.”
21:17Then Yisrael sang this song: “Spring up, O well; sing unto it!
21:18The princes dug the well, the nobles of the people dug it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staffs.” And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah;
21:19and from Mattanah to Naḥaliel (Nahaliel); and from Naḥaliel to Bamot (Bamoth);
21:20and from Bamot in the valley, that is in the country of Moav, to the top of Pisgah, which looks toward Yeshimon (Jeshimon).
21:21And Yisrael sent messengers unto Siḥon (Sihon) king of the Emori, saying,
21:22“Let me pass through your land; we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well; but we will go along by the king’s highway, until we are past your border.”
21:23And Siḥon would not allow Yisrael to pass through his border; but Siḥon gathered all his people together, and went out against Yisrael into the wilderness; and he came to Yahatz (Jahaz), and fought against Yisrael.
21:24And Yisrael struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Yabbok (Jabbok), even unto the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
21:25And Yisrael took all these cities; and Yisrael dwelt in all the cities of the Emori, in Ḥeshbon (Heshbon), and in all its villages.
21:26For Ḥeshbon was the city of Siḥon the king of the Emori, who had fought against the former king of Moav, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.
21:27Therefore they that speak in proverbs say, “Come into Ḥeshbon, let the city of Siḥon be built and established;
21:28for there is a fire gone out of Ḥeshbon, a flame from the city of Siḥon; it has consumed Ar of Moav, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.
21:29Woe to you, Moav! You are undone, O people of Kemosh (Chemosh); he has given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Siḥon king of the Emori.
21:30We have shot at them; Ḥeshbon has perished even unto Divon (Dibon), and we have laid them waste even unto Nofaḥ (Nophah), which reaches unto Medeva (Medeba).”
21:31Thus Yisrael dwelt in the land of the Emori.
21:32And Moshe sent to spy out Ya’zer (Jaazer), and they took its villages, and drove out the Emori that were there.
21:33And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edre’i (Edrei).
21:34And Hashem said unto Moshe, “Fear him not; for I have delivered him into your hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did unto Siḥon king of the Emori, who dwelt at Ḥeshbon.”
21:35So they struck him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive; and they possessed his land.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the Hebrew shows the written form, the reading follows in small type, and a note under the verse gives both. The English follows the reading. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
