Text (469) 608-9944Numbers, Chapter 22
Yisrael camps in the plains of Moav, and Balak the son of Tzippor sends for Bilam the son of Be’or to curse the people; God first forbids him, then lets him go, and on the way the angel of Hashem stands against him, his donkey speaks, and he comes to Balak.
22:1And the children of Yisrael (Israel) set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moav on the other side of the Yarden (Jordan) by Yeriḥo (Jericho).
22:2And Balak the son of Tzippor (Zippor) saw all that Yisrael had done to the Emori (Amorites).
22:3And Moav (Moab) was greatly afraid of the people, because they were many; and Moav was distressed because of the children of Yisrael.
22:4And Moav said unto the elders of Midyan (Midian), “Now shall this company lick up all that are round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Tzippor was king of Moav at that time.
22:5He sent messengers therefore unto Bilam (Balaam) the son of Be’or (Beor) to Petor (Pethor), which is by the river of the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, “Behold, there is a people come out from Mitzrayim (Egypt); behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.
22:6Come now therefore, I pray you, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me; perhaps I shall prevail, that we may strike them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
22:7And the elders of Moav and the elders of Midyan departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Bilam, and spoke unto him the words of Balak.
22:8And he said unto them, “Lodge here this night, and I will bring you word again, as Hashem shall speak unto me.” And the princes of Moav stayed with Bilam.
22:9And God came unto Bilam, and said, “What men are these with you?”
22:10And Bilam said unto God, “Balak the son of Tzippor, king of Moav, has sent unto me, saying,
22:11‘Behold, there is a people come out of Mitzrayim, which covers the face of the earth; come now, curse me them; perhaps I shall be able to overcome them, and drive them out.’”
22:12And God said unto Bilam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people; for they are blessed.”
22:13And Bilam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak, “Go to your land; for Hashem refuses to give me leave to go with you.”
22:14And the princes of Moav rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said, “Bilam refuses to come with us.”
22:15And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they.
22:16And they came to Bilam, and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Tzippor, ‘Let nothing, I pray you, hinder you from coming unto me;
22:17for I will promote you unto very great honor, and I will do whatever you say unto me; come therefore, I pray you, curse me this people.’”
22:18And Bilam answered and said unto the servants of Balak, “If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Hashem my God, to do less or more.
22:19Now therefore, I pray you, stay here also this night, that I may know what more Hashem will say unto me.”
22:20And God came unto Bilam at night, and said unto him, “If the men have come to call you, rise up, and go with them; but only the word which I shall say unto you, that shall you do.”
22:21And Bilam rose up in the morning, and saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moav.
22:22And God’s anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of Hashem stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding upon his donkey, and his two servants were with him.
22:23And the donkey saw the angel of Hashem standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand; and the donkey turned aside out of the way, and went into the field; and Bilam struck the donkey, to turn her into the way.
22:24But the angel of Hashem stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
22:25And when the donkey saw the angel of Hashem, she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Bilam’s foot against the wall; and he struck her again.
22:26And the angel of Hashem went further, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
22:27And when the donkey saw the angel of Hashem, she lay down under Bilam; and Bilam’s anger was kindled, and he struck the donkey with a staff.
22:28And Hashem opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said unto Bilam, “What have I done unto you, that you have struck me these three times?”
22:29And Bilam said unto the donkey, “Because you have mocked me; I would there were a sword in my hand, for now would I kill you.”
22:30And the donkey said unto Bilam, “Am not I your donkey, upon which you have ridden ever since I was yours unto this day? Was I ever accustomed to do so unto you?” And he said, “No.”
22:31Then Hashem opened the eyes of Bilam, and he saw the angel of Hashem standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
22:32And the angel of Hashem said unto him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I went out to withstand you, because your way is perverse before me.
22:33And the donkey saw me, and turned from me these three times; unless she had turned from me, surely now also I would have slain you, and saved her alive.”
22:34And Bilam said unto the angel of Hashem, “I have sinned; for I did not know that you stood in the way against me; now therefore, if it displeases you, I will go back again.”
22:35And the angel of Hashem said unto Bilam, “Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak unto you, that you shall speak.” So Bilam went with the princes of Balak.
22:36And when Balak heard that Bilam had come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moav, which is on the border of Arnon, which is at the farthest end of the border.
22:37And Balak said unto Bilam, “Did I not earnestly send unto you to call you? Why did you not come unto me? Am I not able indeed to promote you to honor?”
22:38And Bilam said unto Balak, “Behold, I have come unto you; have I now any power at all to say anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that shall I speak.”
22:39And Bilam went with Balak, and they came unto Kiryat Ḥutzot (Kirjath-huzoth).
22:40And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Bilam, and to the princes that were with him.
22:41And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Bilam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that from there he might see the farthest part of the people.

- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
