Text (469) 608-9944Numbers, Chapter 20
Miriam dies at Kadesh; the people quarrel for lack of water, and Moshe strikes the rock at Merivah and is told he shall not bring the congregation into the land; Edom refuses Yisrael passage, and Aharon dies on mount Hor, his garments passing to Elazar.
20:1Then came the children of Yisrael (Israel), the whole congregation, into the wilderness of Tzin (Zin) in the first month; and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
20:2And there was no water for the congregation; and they gathered themselves together against Moshe (Moses) and against Aharon (Aaron).
20:3And the people quarreled with Moshe, and spoke, saying, “If only we had died when our brethren died before Hashem!
20:4And why have you brought up the congregation of Hashem into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?
20:5And why have you made us come up out of Mitzrayim (Egypt), to bring us in unto this evil place? It is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.”
20:6And Moshe and Aharon went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces; and the glory of Hashem appeared unto them.
20:7And Hashem spoke unto Moshe, saying,
20:8“Take the rod, and gather the assembly together, you, and Aharon your brother, and speak unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth its water, and you shall bring forth to them water out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their beasts drink.”
20:9And Moshe took the rod from before Hashem, as He commanded him.
20:10And Moshe and Aharon gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, “Hear now, you rebels; must we bring you water out of this rock?”
20:11And Moshe lifted up his hand, and with his rod he struck the rock twice; and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.
20:12And Hashem said unto Moshe and Aharon, “Because you did not believe in Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Yisrael, therefore you shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.”
20:13These are the waters of Merivah (Meribah), because the children of Yisrael strove with Hashem, and He was sanctified in them.
20:14And Moshe sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, “Thus says your brother Yisrael: ‘You know all the hardship that has befallen us:
20:15how our fathers went down into Mitzrayim, and we have dwelt in Mitzrayim a long time; and the Mitzrim (Egyptians) dealt ill with us, and with our fathers;
20:16and when we cried unto Hashem, He heard our voice, and sent an angel, and has brought us forth out of Mitzrayim; and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city at the edge of your border.
20:17Let us pass, I pray you, through your country; we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go by the king’s highway, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border.’”
20:18And Edom said unto him, “You shall not pass through me, lest I come out against you with the sword.”
20:19And the children of Yisrael said unto him, “We will go up by the highway; and if I and my cattle drink of your water, then I will pay for it; only let me, without doing anything else, pass through on my feet.”
20:20And he said, “You shall not pass through.” And Edom came out against him with many people, and with a strong hand.
20:21Thus Edom refused to give Yisrael passage through his border; so Yisrael turned away from him.
20:22And the children of Yisrael, the whole congregation, journeyed from Kadesh, and came unto mount Hor.
20:23And Hashem spoke unto Moshe and Aharon in mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying,
20:24“Aharon shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Yisrael, because you rebelled against My word at the waters of Merivah.
20:25Take Aharon and Elazar (Eleazar) his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor;
20:26and strip Aharon of his garments, and put them upon Elazar his son; and Aharon shall be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.”
20:27And Moshe did as Hashem commanded; and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.
20:28And Moshe stripped Aharon of his garments, and put them upon Elazar his son; and Aharon died there on the top of the mount; and Moshe and Elazar came down from the mount.
20:29And when all the congregation saw that Aharon was dead, they mourned for Aharon thirty days, all the house of Yisrael.
Sources & method
- Hebrew text
- The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
- English translation
- The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
- Verse numbers
- Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Numbers they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 16, 17, 25, 26, 29 and 30; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
