Jubilees, Chapter 11

The sons of Noaḥ begin to make war, shed and eat blood and serve idols as Mastema leads them astray, and he sends ravens to devour the seed; Avram is born, turns from idols to pray to the Creator, drives back the ravens, and teaches the people to sow their seed safely.

War and idols spread

11:1And in the thirty-fifth jubilee, in the third week, in the first year thereof, Reu took to himself a wife, and her name was ’Ora, the daughter of ’Ur, the son of Kesed, and she bore him a son, and he called his name Seroh, in the seventh year of this week in this jubilee.

11:2And the sons of Noaḥ (Noah) began to war on each other, to take captive and to slay each other, and to shed the blood of men on the earth, and to eat blood, and to build strong cities, and walls, and towers, and individuals began to exalt themselves above the nation, and to found the beginnings of kingdoms, and to go to war people against people, and nation against nation, and city against city, and all began to do evil, and to acquire arms, and to teach their sons war, and they began to capture cities, and to sell male and female slaves.

11:3And ’Ur, the son of Kesed, built the city of ’Ara of the Kasdim (Chaldees), and called its name after his own name and the name of his father. And they made for themselves molten images, and they worshiped each the idol, the molten image which they had made for themselves, and they began to make graven images and unclean likenesses, and malignant spirits assisted and seduced them into committing transgression and uncleanness.

11:10And the prince Mastema sent ravens and birds to devour the seed which was sown in the land, in order to destroy the land, and rob the children of men of their labors. Before they could plow in the seed, the ravens picked it from the surface of the ground.

English translation
R. H. Charles, The Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha of the Old Testament (Oxford, 1913), public domain, lightly modernized by Benei Avraham in the same way as our Bible pages: “thee/thou” become “you,” older verb forms are updated, people and places carry their Hebrew names with the familiar English name in parentheses the first time on each page, and “the Lord” (God) is written “Hashem.” Charles’s editorial dates are given in the notes. Digital text from the CrossWire Bible Society’s SWORD module (public domain).
Spanish translation
Translated by Benei Avraham from the English column, in the style of our Reina-Valera pages: Hashem for the Divine Name, Elohim for God, and Hebrew names. There is no public-domain Spanish translation of this book. Choose a translation with the Language drop-down; the choice is remembered on this device.
Ge’ez text
Ge’ez (classical Ethiopic) is the language of the Ethiopian Bible and the only language in which the whole book has survived; it was translated from Greek, which was translated from the lost Hebrew original. The text is August Dillmann’s edition (19th century, public domain) as published in the EOTCOpenSource Bible dataset. Verse numbers follow Charles; where Dillmann’s numbering joins two verses, the later verse says so.
