Genesis, Chapter 44

Yosef has his silver goblet put in Binyamin’s bag; his steward overtakes the brothers and the goblet is found, they return to the city, and Yehudah pleads to remain as a slave in place of the lad for his father’s sake.

The silver goblet

44:1And he commanded the steward of his house, saying, “Fill the men’s bags with food, as much as they can carry, and put every man’s money in the mouth of his bag.

44:2And put my goblet, the silver goblet, in the mouth of the bag of the youngest, and his grain money.” And he did according to the word that Yosef (Joseph) had spoken.

44:3As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.

44:4And when they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Yosef said unto his steward, “Up, follow after the men; and when you overtake them, say unto them, Why have you repaid evil for good?

44:5Is not this the one from which my lord drinks, and by which he indeed divines? You have done evil in so doing.”

44:6And he overtook them, and he spoke unto them these words.

44:7And they said unto him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing.

44:8Behold, the money, which we found in the mouth of our bags, we brought back unto you out of the land of Kena’an (Canaan); how then should we steal out of your lord’s house silver or gold?

44:9With whichever of your servants it is found, let him die, and we also will be my lord’s slaves.”

44:10And he said, “Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my slave; and you shall be blameless.”

44:11Then they hurried and took down every man his bag to the ground, and opened every man his bag.

44:12And he searched, beginning with the eldest, and finishing with the youngest; and the goblet was found in Binyamin’s bag.

44:13Then they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his donkey, and returned to the city.

The brothers before Yosef

44:14And Yehudah and his brothers came to Yosef’s house; and he was still there; and they fell before him on the ground.

44:15And Yosef said unto them, “What deed is this that you have done? Do you not know that such a man as I can indeed divine?”

44:16And Yehudah said, “What shall we say unto my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants; behold, we are my lord’s slaves, both we, and he also in whose hand the goblet is found.”

44:17And he said, “Far be it from me that I should do so; the man in whose hand the goblet is found, he shall be my slave; and as for you, go up in peace unto your father.”

Yehudah’s plea

44:18Then Yehudah (Judah) came near unto him, and said, “Oh, my lord, let your servant, I pray you, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Par’oh (Pharaoh).

44:19My lord asked his servants, saying, Have you a father, or a brother?

44:20And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loves him.

44:21And you said unto your servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set my eyes upon him.

44:22And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father; for if he should leave his father, his father would die.

44:23And you said unto your servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall see my face no more.

44:24And it came to pass when we came up unto your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

44:25And our father said, Go again, buy us a little food.

44:26And we said, We cannot go down; if our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down; for we may not see the man’s face, unless our youngest brother is with us.

44:27And your servant my father said unto us, You know that my wife bore me two sons;

44:28and the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I have not seen him since;

44:29and if you take this one also from me, and harm befall him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol (the grave).

44:30Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life,

44:31it shall come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die; and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol.

44:32For your servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I do not bring him unto you, then I shall bear the blame to my father forever.

44:33Now therefore, I pray you, let your servant remain instead of the lad as a slave to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brothers.

44:34For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad is not with me? Lest I see the evil that shall come upon my father.”

Hebrew text
The Masoretic text with vowels (nikkud) and cantillation marks (ta’amim), from the Westminster Leningrad Codex (public domain) as published by the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible (CC BY 4.0). Where the written text (ketiv) differs from the reading (qere), the reading is shown and the written form follows in small type. A paragraph mark (ס or פ) inside a verse is shown in small type.
English translation
The King James Version (public domain), lightly modernized by Benei Avraham: “thee/thou/ye” become “you,” older verb forms are updated (“hath” to “has”), and archaic words are replaced only where the meaning would otherwise be unclear. People and places carry their Hebrew names, with the King James spelling in parentheses the first time on each page (e.g., Yehudah (Judah)). The Divine Name (יהוה, “the LORD” in the KJV) is written “Hashem”; “God” (Elohim) is unchanged, and “law” is “Torah” where the Hebrew is תּוֹרָה.
Verse numbers
Verse numbers follow the Hebrew Bible. In Genesis they differ from most English Bibles, or a verse is divided differently, in chapters 31 and 32; a note under the summary on those pages explains how.
